Biography
Dan Miller, PhD, is a Lecturer in Psychology at James Cook University. His research examines how emerging technologies, including AI-generated media, shape human behaviour, wellbeing, and society. Dr Miller has published extensively on the impacts of digital sexual media and on human detection of deepfakes. He also has a research interest in sex and relationships and mental health and wellbeing.
Research Groups/Collaborations: Dan is a founding member of the JCU Digital Wellbeing Group, an interdisciplinary research consortium dedicated to bridging the gap between technological advancement and community health, wellbeing, safety, and connection. As part of the JCU Digital Wellbeing Group he leads a research stream on media effects and misinformation. He is also a member of the Margaret Roderick Centre for Mental Health Research and was the Australian collaborator on the International Sex Survey—a large-scale survey which investigated sexual wellbeing among 80,000 participants from over 42 nations.

Teaching: Dr Miller currently coordinates PY2107: Conducting and Interpreting Experimental Studies in Psychology and PY3106: Historical Foundations of Modern Psychology. He also conducts scholarship on the learning and teaching of research methods and statistics as a co-lead of the Psychology Research Education Group and is a producer of the Professionally Psyched Podcast, which showcases the work and achievements of JCU Psychology staff and students.
Service: Dr Miller is an Ethics Advisor and member of the Low/Negligible Risk Human Research Ethics Committee. He also convenes CHS Research Bites, a monthly research seminar highlighting the research work of members of the College of Healthcare Sciences.
