GBR Marine Park morphology mapping (Old ID 26709)

This research will generate the most accurate and up-to-date 3D depth model for the GBR Marine Park, at the 30 m pixel resolution, using all the available source bathymetry data. This fundamental dataset will then be used to derive morphology layers, as per the proposed structure of the National Seafloor GeoMorphology (NSGM) mapping scheme, being developed by Geoscience Australia.
Geology and Ore Potential of the Tommy Creek Block, Mount Isa Inlier (Old ID 22960)

The objective of the proposal is to establish a new research project to understand the geological evolution of the prospective Tommy Creek Block, located near Cloncurry, utilising the expertise of geological staff and research facilities / resources at JCU, Cardiff University, and our industry partners Mount Isa Mines (MIM - Glencore and GBM Resources. These research partnerships will be further strengthened through this project. The project is designed to deliver benefits to the industry partners by providing an improved understanding of the geology of an active mineral exploration region, which will directly lead to better strategies for exploration and hence, enhanced prospects of exploration success. Such future mineral resource discovery is crucial to sustain the economic prosperity of Queensland. The project will provide industry with highly trained graduates with the specific skills sets needed to develop successful career paths in the minerals industry.
State of the Arts in Cairns (Old ID 26201)

Cairns Regional Council has aspirations to become the Arts and Culture Capital of Northern Australia and has embedded this in their Strategy for Culture and the Arts 2022. This research works alongside the Strategy to: * Develop indicators that can measure the extent and change in the arts and creative industries over time (using Census data, Council/Stakeholder data) * Identify opportunities for growth in the creative sector (using the Culture Map, interviews with arts/culture industries). * To produce a State of the Arts in Cairns Report summarising the data and analysis (which can inform appropriate, place-based development of creative industries policies).
AuScope Geochemistry Laboratory Network (AGN) – IsoTropics Partnership (Old ID 27574)

Curtin has received funding from AuScope Pty Ltd for a research project entitled AuScope Geochemistry Laboratory Network (AGN). As part of the project, Curtin is looking to collaborate with new partners to expand its AusGeochem data repository to allow it to become a key resource in quantitatively understanding the evolution of earth system processes that have shaped the Australian continent and its resource endowment. In 2021, AuScope released additional funding to Curtin to allow an expansion of the AGN through a Data Partnerships Expansion (DPE) project. Expectations of new AGN Data Partner institutions will be to: (1) manage the employment contract for the AGN Data Scientist; (2) register and upload a minimum of 150 geochemical datasets obtained from rock or mineral samples to AusGeochem. At JCU, AUD$50,000 (excl GST) is being provided to support the costs of employing an AGN Data Scientist. The funding will be paid upon invoice to be accompanied by a statement of expenditure.
GBRF EOI Island Monitoring (Old ID 27698)

The more than 1000 islands and cays in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) World Heritage Area (GBRMPA spatial data, 2019) support a diverse range of ecological, cultural and economic values. Many are threatened by climate change, but monitoring and management is difficult as many cays are remote and difficult to access. This project will develop and implement an efficient drone-based hierarchical monitoring protocol based on the recognition and use of ‘natural ground control points’ that will enable more rapid and resource efficient capture of reef island status to inform management decisions.
Investigating the archaeological values of Marra cultural heritage sites (Old ID 31114)

This project aims to investigate the archaeological landscape of Limmen National Park, the traditional Country of the Marra people, and to inform the creation of a cultural heritage management plan. It builds on a long-standing relationship with the Marra and the urgency to preserve their cultural knowledge associated with the Park. The project will use a two-way thinking methodology, combining contemporary Aboriginal knowledge with archaeological and anthropological data to understand the meaning of the archaeological record for Aboriginal people today. Key outcomes include data for continent-wide archaeological narratives, a holistic blueprint to help manage the Park’s cultural heritage, and an archive for Traditional Owner research.
Enhanced weathering for carbon dioxide removal under tropical soil conditions

To meet climate targets we must drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but we will also need to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. A novel ‘negative emission technology’ showing considerable promise is enhanced weathering. This involves applying crushed weatherable rock such as basalt to topsoil, where weathering reactions convert carbon dioxide gas to dissolved bicarbonate, which then flows to the sea where it is stored as bicarbonate or carbonate. In this project we will test the effect of soil properties and management factors on carbon dioxide removal via enhanced weathering in a tropical agricultural environment.

This project is built on an extension project funded by the Great Barrier Reef foundation to Terrain NRM. Terrain NRM contacted JCU to collaborate on a small study to better understand the partitioning of water, using radon measurements as a way to quantify groundwater contributions to the constructed wetland in Innisfail.
Collaborative science for monitoring of Northern Territory marine megafauna (Old ID 27097)

This project will be a partnership between Indigenous rangers (Gumurr-Marthakal Rangers, Larrakia Rangers), national park managers (Kakadu National Park and Cobourg Marine Park) and scientists (Charles Darwin, Macquarie, James Cook and Edith Cowan Universities, Australian Institute of Marine Science, Taronga Conservation Society) to provide fundamental information on the ecology of northern Australian marine megafauna to design and support collaborative regional biodiversity monitoring programs that inform effective environmental management. We will conduct cutting edge seascape genetics and movement ecology research to map population connectivity and critical habitat areas and collaboratively develop methods for ongoing data collection, sharing and analysis. We have dual aims of developing (1) the best science for conservation management and decision making for marine megafauna and (2) the most appropriate approaches for cross-cultural and trans-disciplinary collaboration with Indigenous Traditional Owners and managers.
Alluvial Gully Remediation in the Upper Burdekin Catchment (Old ID 27857)

In catchments draining to the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, northeast Queensland, Australia, excess sediment derived from gully erosion is contributing to poor coastal water quality. Remediating and preventing further degradation of these landscapes is a major focus of investment toward improving coastal water quality. This project will monitor and evaluate the effect of several alluvial gully remediation measures on improving water quality in the Upper Burdekin catchment. The project will provide valuable new data, knowledge and understanding of the effectiveness of these remediation approaches for landholders interested in protecting and enhancing forage productivity, and for the organisations investing in activities to reduce sediment and nutrient loads delivered to the Great Barrier Reef.
