Optimising Asian seabass research and production in Singapore through an integrated approach

This research program, under the SFS R&D Programme 2.0, brings together experts from 8 Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) and Research Institutes (RIs) through AquaPolis. Prioritizing animal trials, it ensures that collected data and samples benefit multiple experts, fostering comprehensive research across three work packages (WPs). These work packages aim to improve fingerling robustness and quality (WP1), increase disease resistance and survival of fish during grow out phase (WP2), and develop feed that allows sustainable and high-quality fish production (WP3).

The residue left after leaching is a silica-rich sand material, which will be a washed, filtered and neutralised with magnesia, before being stockpiled on site for over 36 months. Numerous options for the end use of this leach residue have been investigated and were previously reported by JCU. These included re-use as a building product in bricks and as an engineered fill. The results favoured the material as a potential fill material and since these results were published numerous potential sites requiring fill in and around the Townville region have been identified. For this to be viable the mechanical and chemical properties of the material must be further investigated. If successful, the results of this test program should indicate eligibility for an End of Waste Code (EOWC).

The project will engage a full-time postdoctoral fellow for 12 months to compile fire proxy data for the new data collection SahulCHAR, to oversee the data collection of environmental radiocarbon ages for SahulSED, and to lead the development of resources for the maintenance and community-led updates of these collections. The postdoctoral fellow will lead the E&E activities and support the RT&E activities described below and will update existing collections as needed. Results will be included in a series of planned papers to coincide with the launch of the new collections.
Assessing natural capital in North-West Queensland rangelands

This project seeks to develop a Rangelands Natural Capital assessment platform, tailored to the extensive grazing lands of north-west Queensland. The platform will enable landholders to interactively explore key natural capital indicators across their property through space and time. It will integrates freely available spatial datasets with field data to visualise trends in ground cover, vegetation, soil, and biodiversity condition. Producers will be able to export simple, easy-to-interpret reports. By providing tailored training and guidance to producers, the platform will build producer capacity to understand, monitor, and demonstrate the condition and value of their natural capital assets — supporting both improved land management and potential participation in carbon, biodiversity, and other ecosystem service markets. The Project is funded by Southern Gulf NRM through the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) Climate Smart Agriculture Program.

This project will adopt a collaborative partnership approach with TropWATER and the Reef Restoration Foundation to build the skills, knowledge and experiences of Gunggandji and Mandingalbay Yidinji Peoples for mapping, monitoring and assessing Sea Country. This collaborative approach will incorporate an Indigenous Knowledge perspective with Western science to help ensure that Traditional Owners are empowered to lead Reef restoration work, and to make and contribute to informed decisions about managing their Sea Country. Through co-designed workshops and training—both on and off Country—rangers will learn species and habitat identification and survey methods, will undertake baseline.

The Sexual and Reproductive Health Needs of International Backpackers Visiting Cairns, Australia
This qualitative project aims to explore international backpackers’: (1) knowledge of and experiences with HIV and STI prevention and contraception; (2) knowledge of and experiences with accessing sexual and reproductive healthcare; and (3) knowledge of and experiences with testing for HIV, STIs, and pregnancies while travelling in the Cairns and Tablelands regions. In all, this project will examine how existing sexual and reproductive health services can best engage with international backpackers travelling in the Cairns and Tablelands regions, while providing novel insights into the needs of this population.
