Investigating 2022-23 monsoon and flooding impacts to freshwater threatened species and their environments in North West and Central Qld.

This project is a collaboration between James Cook University (JCU) and State Government Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation to undertake surveys that will support the assessment of impacts of the 2022-23 monsoon and flooding events on freshwater threatened species. Impacts will be assessed by gathering freshwater species distribution data gained through electronic DNA (eDNA) surveys with samples to be analysed for presence/absence of threatened freshwater sawfish and invasive species. Broad biodiversity community distribution data will also be collected via eDNA sampling. This data will be used by the Department to highlight and prioritise impacted and at risk threatened freshwater threatened species and distribution of pest fish species to provide recommendations for recovery, resilience planning and protection measures as required to inform investment for other subpackages in the Environmental Recovery Program where appropriate
