The strategic goal of the collaboration is to pool expertise and resources in order to accelerate the adoption of continuous flow photochemical reactors by the fine chemical industry. For each party, the objectives of the collaboration are: For Vapourtec to benefit from the photochemical reaction knowledge and expertise at MO-JCU together with the academic and industrial contacts that may be made available through MO-JCU. For MO-JCU to have the opportunity to trial photochemical reactions on the equipment that Vapourtec makes available, this will include equipment up to pilot scale.
Ozone impacts on tropical vegetation; implications for forest productivity (Trop-Oz) (Old ID 24894)

Tropospheric ozone is the third most significant anthropogenic greenhouse gas and has been shown to reduce global plant productivity though oxidative stress. Although tropical forests have been highlighted as being potentially being vulnerable to this ozone damage, few studies have looked at role of ozone in these regions. This project will provide comprehensive measurements of the effects of ozone on plant physiology in tropical forests and use this new knowledge to parameterise global land-surface models.
Providing natural heritage technical advice on World Heritage (Old ID 25019)

To ensure that Australia meets its obligations as a world Heritage committee member by conducting technical natural heritage research and analysis on the sites that are subject to World Heritage inscription and state of conservation decisions in 2018 by: 1) reviewing world Heritage Centre documents that relate to the site inscription nominations and state of conservation assessments; and 2) providing expert natural heritage technical advice to the Australian Government at the 42nd World Heritage Committee Session in Bahrain.

Cairns Regional Council has aspirations to become the Arts and Culture Capital of Northern Australia and has embedded this in their Strategy for Culture and the Arts 2022. This research works alongside the Strategy to: * Develop indicators that can measure the extent and change in the arts and creative industries over time (using Census data, Council/Stakeholder data) * Identify opportunities for growth in the creative sector (using the Culture Map, interviews with arts/culture industries). * To produce a State of the Arts in Cairns Report summarising the data and analysis (which can inform appropriate, place-based development of creative industries policies).
AuScope Geochemistry Laboratory Network (AGN) – IsoTropics Partnership (Old ID 27574)

Curtin has received funding from AuScope Pty Ltd for a research project entitled AuScope Geochemistry Laboratory Network (AGN). As part of the project, Curtin is looking to collaborate with new partners to expand its AusGeochem data repository to allow it to become a key resource in quantitatively understanding the evolution of earth system processes that have shaped the Australian continent and its resource endowment. In 2021, AuScope released additional funding to Curtin to allow an expansion of the AGN through a Data Partnerships Expansion (DPE) project. Expectations of new AGN Data Partner institutions will be to: (1) manage the employment contract for the AGN Data Scientist; (2) register and upload a minimum of 150 geochemical datasets obtained from rock or mineral samples to AusGeochem. At JCU, AUD$50,000 (excl GST) is being provided to support the costs of employing an AGN Data Scientist. The funding will be paid upon invoice to be accompanied by a statement of expenditure.

The more than 1000 islands and cays in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) World Heritage Area (GBRMPA spatial data, 2019) support a diverse range of ecological, cultural and economic values. Many are threatened by climate change, but monitoring and management is difficult as many cays are remote and difficult to access. This project will develop and implement an efficient drone-based hierarchical monitoring protocol based on the recognition and use of ‘natural ground control points’ that will enable more rapid and resource efficient capture of reef island status to inform management decisions.
Investigating the archaeological values of Marra cultural heritage sites (Old ID 31114)

This project aims to investigate the archaeological landscape of Limmen National Park, the traditional Country of the Marra people, and to inform the creation of a cultural heritage management plan. It builds on a long-standing relationship with the Marra and the urgency to preserve their cultural knowledge associated with the Park. The project will use a two-way thinking methodology, combining contemporary Aboriginal knowledge with archaeological and anthropological data to understand the meaning of the archaeological record for Aboriginal people today. Key outcomes include data for continent-wide archaeological narratives, a holistic blueprint to help manage the Park’s cultural heritage, and an archive for Traditional Owner research.
Enhanced weathering for carbon dioxide removal under tropical soil conditions

To meet climate targets we must drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but we will also need to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. A novel ‘negative emission technology’ showing considerable promise is enhanced weathering. This involves applying crushed weatherable rock such as basalt to topsoil, where weathering reactions convert carbon dioxide gas to dissolved bicarbonate, which then flows to the sea where it is stored as bicarbonate or carbonate. In this project we will test the effect of soil properties and management factors on carbon dioxide removal via enhanced weathering in a tropical agricultural environment.
Is the pygmy Coremiocnemis sp. “social”?

The primary objective is to study social behaviours of the pygmy Coremiocnemis sp. The project has two main aims. (1) I aim to describe and quantify the extent to which the pygmy Coremiocnemis sp. demonstrates subsociality in captivity. (2) I aim to determine whether subsociality is simply a consequence of captivity, or whether subsociality is present in wild populations. If they demonstrate subsociality, this study will represent the first demonstration of these behaviours in a tropical tarantula species from Australia. This project aligns with the Foundation objective of “Pure research aimed at understanding rainforest flora and fauna, ecosystems, processes and biological interactions”.
The relative contribution of gleaning to Tonga's inshore fishery

The services to be provided are, as part of a team detailed in C.A.5 Specified Personnel and C.A.6 Subcontractors, to travel to Tonga to undertake a scoping study to evaluate the contribution of gleaning activities in Tonga’s inshore fisheries. The scoping study will include scoping activities such as; • reviewing existing data including the small survey done by the Vava’u Environmental Protection Agency in collaboration with Ministry of Fisheries Tonga (MoF) and any other available data on gleaning that MoF has been collecting (hard drives, reports etc). This activity is expected to take approximately 1 week and will involve working from MoF offices with MoF staff member, Sela Kioa. The specified personnel, Dr Patrick Smallhorn-West, holds an MoU with MoF for the purposes of supporting research on Tonga’s marine ecosystems and fisheries to strengthen the resilience of these systems, generate high quality research outputs, support knowledge co-production, and improve overall efficacy of marine management and conservation in Tonga. The current MoU will expire in January 2027, at which time an extension will be discussed. • conducting community land surveys and market surveys in 9-12 communities (3-4 in each island group). The surveys will involve recording catch (kg, species) and effort (hrs) of people in gleaning communities. Market data will also be paired with these surveys to attribute a dollar value to catch. The surveys will be conducted in person by the specified personnel and subcontractors. Once the survey methodology is finalised, it will be shared with the Contract Manager for approval. The activities are being undertaken in order to understand the extent and economic contribution of gleaning in Tonga. The Supplier is required to work with the Tongan Ministry of Fisheries when undertaking the scoping activities. The Supplier is required to submit a detailed work plan that will include an estimated timeline of activities, in Word format via email to the Contract Manager by 31 March 2024. At the completion of the services, the Supplier is required to submit a draft report that documents a summary of activities, trip report, review results including the key findings, opportunities and recommendations. The draft report is to be submitted by 1 February 2025. Following feedback from the Contract Manager, the final report is due by 28 February 2025.
