George Vamvounis

I am a Polymer Chemist, and my research is translational in nature, focusing on advancing our understanding of sustainability. To that end, my research relates to (1) polymer semiconductors and (2) understanding and solving plastic pollution.

(1) Polymer semiconductors are revolutionizing how we generate and use energy (e.g., Polymer Solar Cells and light-emitting diodes). My research is focused on the preparation, characterization, and modeling of polymer semiconductors for these applications.

(2) Plastic pollution, particularly in the form of microplastics, is growing rapidly, and we need to understand its ecological effects and propose solutions. My research focuses on additive leaching processes and the development of sustainable alternatives.

Teaching Philosophy: I believe that a student’s ability to grow in his/her understanding of the topic is facilitated by (a) bridging their existing knowledge with their new learning experience, (b) promoting healthy communication and (c) promoting interest in the curriculum. When used together, I believe that student learning can be maximized to enable long-term retention with diverse student backgrounds and experiences.
