Postdoctoral Research Fellow

    Biography

Sarfaraz Ali is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Medicinal Chemistry at James Cook University, where he works with Assoc. Prof. Phurpa Wangchuk. He completed his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Wollongong, specialising in organic synthesis. During his doctoral research, he used indigo dye as a starting material to design and synthesise unprecedented complex heterocyclic compounds, contributing to the development of novel molecular scaffolds. Currently, his postdoctoral research focuses on the investigation of Australian Aboriginal medicinal plants to isolate bioactive compounds with potential therapeutic applications for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). In addition, he is involved in another project where he is designing synthetic routes to produce previously isolated biologically active compounds, enabling their preparation on a large scale and expanding their potential applications.
