Biography
Dr Amanda J. Meyer is a Senior Lecturer in Anatomy and Pathology in the College of Medicine and Dentistry at James Cook University. She is an anatomist, medical scientist, and recognised leader in anatomy education whose work spans curriculum leadership, educational research, equity and inclusion, and national public engagement.
Dr Meyer has 15 years of experience teaching human anatomy across Australian universities, educating over 10,000 students from first‑year undergraduates to graduate doctors. At JCU, she delivers and coordinates anatomy teaching across medicine and biomedical science, with a strong focus on clinically meaningful, evidence‑based, and inclusive education that supports students from regional, rural, and diverse backgrounds. Her teaching practice integrates body donor prosections, clinical imaging, and authentic case‑based approaches to ensure anatomical knowledge is transferable to professional practice.
She is an internationally recognised scholar of anatomy education, with 23 peer‑reviewed manuscripts, many in top‑ranked international journals, and has a sustained record of high research impact and global collaboration. Dr Meyer is co‑author of A Textbook of Neuroanatomy (3rd edition, Wiley), a major international textbook used in medical and health science programs. Her research focuses on anatomy education, technology‑enhanced learning, assessment design, and anatomical terminology, with particular attention to how educational practices affect learning, motivation, and equity.
Dr Meyer provides academic leadership at institutional, national, and international levels. At JCU, she is Co‑Chair of the Medicine Assessment Review Working Group and Co‑Chair of the Teaching Excellence and Collaborative Hub, contributing to strategic leadership in assessment quality, teaching excellence, and academic standards. Internationally, she serves as Secretary of the Federative International Committee for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Anatomy and is a founding member of the Global Neuroanatomy Network, a major international initiative supporting collaboration and open educational resources in neuroanatomy.
Her sustained excellence in education has been recognised through multiple teaching awards, including Students’ Choice Awards and a School‑level Individual Teaching Excellence Award, alongside consistent student nominations across institutions. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, reflecting her recognised standing as an expert educator.
Beyond the university sector, Dr Meyer is a highly visible and trusted public communicator of anatomy and human biology. She is a regular contributor to The Conversation, with anatomy‑based articles read by hundreds of thousands of readers globally, and a frequent guest on ABC Radio across Australia, where she explains complex anatomical topics in clear, accurate, and accessible ways. This sustained public engagement demonstrates national esteem and impact beyond academia.
Dr Meyer’s work is grounded in a strong commitment to educational leadership, scholarly impact, equity and inclusion, and meaningful engagement, contributing to James Cook University’s mission to deliver education and research that make a genuine difference locally, nationally, and internationally.
