Building Teacher Capability Using STEM Partnership Models (Old ID 22736)
We propose to establish and pilot two QSTEM Hubs - one metropolitan and one regional. Each hub will consist of three to four schools. Industry partners will be identified via our links with the Australian Industry Group (AIG) and in consultation with the school principals and Regional STEM Officers, and invited to participate. The AIG has a strong commitment to building STEM capital through industry partnerships with education, demonstrated through its STEM Skills project and STEM Program Index 2016, and has agreed to facilitate industry participation in our project. Other suitable partners such as museums, science centres, research institutes, community groups etc. will be identified through QUT connections as well as those of the schools and the department, and invited to participate.
Mathematics Curriculum Resources in Queensland
The study aims to investigate the current landscape of mathematics curriculum resource usage, decision-making processes, and challenges faced by teachers.
Out of Field mathematics teacher project
The project seeks to advance our understanding of current mathematics teacher shortage facing Australia and many other countries.

Research into Best Practice Models for Online Teaching of Mathematics
The research examines best practice models for online teaching of mathematics in schools, the use of technology platforms
and factors that contribute to the success of such platforms, and implementation issues. The research builds upon existing
strong models for teaching mathematics online and examines approaches that have been successful in lifting mathematics and
numeracy outcomes.
For the Provision of Research in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Inclusion in Queensland State Schools
Within this PAR model, CALD students are empowered as co-researchers and experts in their own lives, whom the study is ‘with’ rather than ‘about’ (Tsey et al., 2004). This PAR driven process will allow for robust data collection. A systemic integration and interpretations of the findings will be integral to the development of CALD student determined and targeted intervention that aligns with a holistic human rights-based approach. This research design will help provide evidence on the ways that CALD students feel a sense of belonging and most empowered to excel and thrive in Queensland state schools.
Embedding digital technology in learning, teaching and assessment in HPE
Assessment practices traditionally utilised used in schools to evaluate physical capabilities of students are often superficial, inaccurate, and potentially biased leading to unreliable reporting (see DinanThompson & Penney, 2015). Furthermore, resultant of academic focus on literacy, numeracy and STEM subjects, what happens in HPE, flies ‘under the radar’, thereby avoiding accountability to be purposeful and meaningful (see Penney, 2020, Penney, in press). This research project aimed to determine how the use of digital technologies could address this identified problem.
