Continental-Scale Threatened Species Monitoring using an Acoustic Observatory (Old ID 29014)

Monitoring threatened species and biodiversity is the cornerstone of conservation. However, it is difficult to monitor land at the scale necessary to implement conservation actions for many species. Acoustic monitoring offers a potential solution, though large scale continuous monitoring of vocal threatened species, and of biodiversity more generally. Monitoring is needed to track the trajectories of species populations, determining whether they are endangered, and to plan and execute subsequent management actions. Monitoring is also needed to evaluate the success, or otherwise, of conservation activities. Our project leverages a large infrastructure project called the Australian Acoustic Observatory (Roe et al. 2021. Methods in Ecology and Evolution 12:1802-8). The Observatory comprises 344 acoustic recorders, located at various types of nature reserves, and some grazing properties, all over Australia. The acoustic devices record environmental sound 24/7, and have done so since mid-2020, and will continue to monitor until 2025 or longer. This provides an amazing resource, but the data needs to be mined to provide information on threatened species presence and activity, to inform conservation. Acoustic monitoring is a relatively new approach to conservation, and projects are required to develop methods and tools to make sense of the huge data being collected. Thus far, we have established the A2O, and are presently conducting a project to do manual surveys (bird watching, camera trapping, live trapping, and active searching) at 6 sites over 2 years, confirming the high quality monitoring capacity of the Observatory by comparing species lists obtained using each method. We have manually detected 5 near threatened, vulnerable, endangered and critically endangered species at only these 6 sites, but there is the potential to detect many more, by searching the acoustic data across all our sites, not just 6. However, this requires automated tools to analyse mass data to provide reports for land managers on threatened species to drive conservation actions. It is these activities that are the essence of our project.
Geology and Ore Potential of the Tommy Creek Block, Mount Isa Inlier (Old ID 22960)

The objective of the proposal is to establish a new research project to understand the geological evolution of the prospective Tommy Creek Block, located near Cloncurry, utilising the expertise of geological staff and research facilities / resources at JCU, Cardiff University, and our industry partners Mount Isa Mines (MIM - Glencore and GBM Resources. These research partnerships will be further strengthened through this project. The project is designed to deliver benefits to the industry partners by providing an improved understanding of the geology of an active mineral exploration region, which will directly lead to better strategies for exploration and hence, enhanced prospects of exploration success. Such future mineral resource discovery is crucial to sustain the economic prosperity of Queensland. The project will provide industry with highly trained graduates with the specific skills sets needed to develop successful career paths in the minerals industry.
Coral Reef Health in the Coral Sea Marine Park (Old ID 24771)

A number of coral reefs occur in the Australian Marine Parks estate, particularly within the Coral Sea Marine Park (CSMP). In 2016 and 2017, coral reefs in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and CSMP were impacted by a mass global coral bleaching event. Regular surveys of coral bleaching and associated reef health in the CSMP are needed to inform future marine park management over the next three years to either enable comparisons against historical baselines where bleaching has previously occurred, or set new baselines for areas that aren’t bleached but may be in the future.
Lobster Aquaculture Groote Eylandt Phase 2A - Nursery (Old ID 27401)

This project is part of a research and development program to establish tropical rock lobster aquaculture at Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory. The project complements Phase 1 (lobster seed assessment, on-going) and will support development of nursing of seed lobsters. The project will include components of both research and development, examining and trialling various technologies in the sea and on land to nurture small lobsters from the puerulus stage to a size of up to 100g. The project includes aspects of aquaculture technology development, training, extension, social science, economics and marketing. The project will provide the Anindilyakwa Land Council with the means and confidence to establish commercial lobster nursery operations. The project represents the first part (Part A) of nursery development and there is an expectation of a follow-on project (Part B) to continue the nursery development through 2022.
Development of Pilot Scale Continuous Flow Photochemical Reactors (Old ID 22371)

The strategic goal of the collaboration is to pool expertise and resources in order to accelerate the adoption of continuous flow photochemical reactors by the fine chemical industry. For each party, the objectives of the collaboration are: For Vapourtec to benefit from the photochemical reaction knowledge and expertise at MO-JCU together with the academic and industrial contacts that may be made available through MO-JCU. For MO-JCU to have the opportunity to trial photochemical reactions on the equipment that Vapourtec makes available, this will include equipment up to pilot scale.
Ozone impacts on tropical vegetation; implications for forest productivity (Trop-Oz) (Old ID 24894)

Tropospheric ozone is the third most significant anthropogenic greenhouse gas and has been shown to reduce global plant productivity though oxidative stress. Although tropical forests have been highlighted as being potentially being vulnerable to this ozone damage, few studies have looked at role of ozone in these regions. This project will provide comprehensive measurements of the effects of ozone on plant physiology in tropical forests and use this new knowledge to parameterise global land-surface models.
Providing natural heritage technical advice on World Heritage (Old ID 25019)

To ensure that Australia meets its obligations as a world Heritage committee member by conducting technical natural heritage research and analysis on the sites that are subject to World Heritage inscription and state of conservation decisions in 2018 by: 1) reviewing world Heritage Centre documents that relate to the site inscription nominations and state of conservation assessments; and 2) providing expert natural heritage technical advice to the Australian Government at the 42nd World Heritage Committee Session in Bahrain.

This research works alongside the Strategy to: * Develop indicators that can measure the extent and change in the arts and creative industries over time (using Census data, Council/Stakeholder data) * Identify opportunities for growth in the creative sector (using the Culture Map, interviews with arts/culture industries). * To produce a State of the Arts in Cairns Report summarising the data and analysis (which can inform appropriate, place-based development of creative industries policies).
AuScope Geochemistry Laboratory Network (AGN) – IsoTropics Partnership (Old ID 27574)

Curtin has received funding from AuScope Pty Ltd for a research project entitled AuScope Geochemistry Laboratory Network (AGN). As part of the project, Curtin is looking to collaborate with new partners to expand its AusGeochem data repository to allow it to become a key resource in quantitatively understanding the evolution of earth system processes that have shaped the Australian continent and its resource endowment. In 2021, AuScope released additional funding to Curtin to allow an expansion of the AGN through a Data Partnerships Expansion (DPE) project. Expectations of new AGN Data Partner institutions will be to: (1) manage the employment contract for the AGN Data Scientist; (2) register and upload a minimum of 150 geochemical datasets obtained from rock or mineral samples to AusGeochem. At JCU, AUD$50,000 (excl GST) is being provided to support the costs of employing an AGN Data Scientist. The funding will be paid upon invoice to be accompanied by a statement of expenditure.

The more than 1000 islands and cays in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) World Heritage Area (GBRMPA spatial data, 2019) support a diverse range of ecological, cultural and economic values. Many are threatened by climate change, but monitoring and management is difficult as many cays are remote and difficult to access. This project will develop and implement an efficient drone-based hierarchical monitoring protocol based on the recognition and use of ‘natural ground control points’ that will enable more rapid and resource efficient capture of reef island status to inform management decisions.
