Developing an appropriate depression screening tool for Aboriginal people living in Far North Queensland. (Old ID 28957)

Continuing impacts of colonialism negatively affects Indigenous peoples' health and health outcomes, including mental health. Mainstream tools used to screen for mental ill-health are often not fit for purpose because they use words that do not facilitate accurate reporting of symptoms for diagnosis. Additionally, adapted tools may not be adequately validated. The aim of the study is to develop an appropriate depression screening tool for Aboriginal people aged 18 and over living in Far North Queensland. This project will begin the adaptation process by identifying tools used and words used by Aboriginal people to express depression in clinical settings.
Social Work collaborates with Dentistry to equip undergraduate dental students with training resources to ensure best practice and competency in recognizing and responding to domestic and sexual violence. (Old ID 30044)

Training JCU Dentistry students identified gaps in domestic and sexual violence (DSV) resources specifically designed for dentists. Dentistry-focussed resources would effectively demonstrate the vital skills required to competently recognise and respond (RR) to DSV. This project aims to develop, implement and evaluate such resources utilising a PAR model. Outcomes include simulation resources that enhance education of JCU dental students, clinical staff, and supervisors. Resources will also be available to organisations beyond JCU to train the broader health workforce, aligning with grant requirements for projects that contribute to ending violence against women and children in one generation. Dissemination will include academic journals and conferences.
Role of liver fluke granulin in cholangiocarcinogenesis (Old ID 19534)

Long term infection with liver fluke - a food-borne parasitic worm -leads to cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), a form of liver cancer with a dismal prognosis. Previously we identified a protein from these parasites that may cause this cancer. This new project will investigate the role of this parasite protein (termed granulin) in cancer, which may lead to new treatments and control for fluke infection and CCA.
What's really damaging the reef? Tracing the origin and fate of the environmentally detrimental sediment (Old ID 22541)

Recent research has shown that only a portion of the fine sediment fraction delivered from rivers draining into the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon reaches coral reefs and seagrass meadows. The specific sources of this sediment, which affects the health of corals and seagrasses, are as yet unresolved. This project will, for the first time characterise and trace the origin(s) and fate of this environmentally detrimental sediment using samples collected in flood plumes and during resuspension events. This will enable direct spatial targeting of the sources of this material to achieve maximum benefits to GBR health from catchment management actions.

City wide data can be utilised to better understand what is happening in the region and to better manage scarce resources. For example, city-wide data, such as energy and water, are generated by numerous parties and could provide patterns of utilisation to the Cairns and Townsville City Councils to manage local uses in city planning. Connecting and integrating distributed data from research, public and private sector agencies would empower better investment decisions for sustainable development in urban centres.

Barramundi - Australia’s favourite fish – is gaining popularity worldwide as a farmed solution for supply of white fish. The world needs a sustainable source of white fish, as current supply comes from declining wild catch fisheries. Industrial scale farming offers a solution. Success relies on improved seed stock and the Australian Barramundi industry in conjunction with the CRC-P program is tackling this challenge by applying advanced modern genetics to Australia’s barramundi breeding stocks.
Virtual Reality 3D First Aid Training Scene Capture Solution (Old ID 23632)

To provide a much more immersive experience for first aid training, the funding body - Rescue Swag is seeking a solution to replace the conventional 2D first aid scene capture solution. This project is aiming at design a 3D stereoscopic shooting solution using the high definition camera, including both system design, hardware and software solutions. At the end of this project, a system will be experience, and improve the training outcomes.

Secondly, consolidating the linkages and alignments, where appropriate, with other Commonwealth-funded (NCRIS and Super Science) e-infrastructure investments.
