The Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program (RRAP) is the world’s largest effort to help a significant ecosystem survive climate change. This cross-institutional program draws together experts from a variety of disciplines and focusses on the design and implementation of effective technologies and strategies to intervene in and restore the resilience of the Reef under climate change. RRAP’s Stakeholder and Traditional Owner Engagement Sub-Program aims to ensure that technologies and management options developed under the program are socially and culturally responsible, and that their use is acceptable to stakeholders, Traditional Owners, managers, communities and the public. The Sub-Program is divided in three sub-projects: (i) Social licence and impact monitoring (ii) Best-practice engagement; and (iii) Adaptive governance and learning. JCU leads the Social Licence and Impact Monitoring (SLM) sub-project, which will see researchers engaging directly with stakeholder groups, Traditional Owners, communities and the Australian public more broadly to collect qualitative and quantitative data to support research outcomes across the RRAP Program.
Tropical North Queensland Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub (TNQ Hub)

This project will establish, implement and manage the TNQHub (“Hub”) activities including collaborative research, development, extension, adoption and commercialisation (RDEA&C). The Hub will help Australian farmers and communities become more prepared for, and resilient to, the impacts of drought. The objective is to invest in RDEA&C activities, which involves: - Cross-sectoral innovative and transformative RDEA&C - Focus on the needs of end users, involving them in the co-design and adoption phases of research and development - Delivery of effective communication of new and existing knowledge and technologies - Co-investment in national drought resilience RDEA&C priorities with collaboration and co-design between governments, primary producers, community groups, research and training provider

The goal of the project is to construct a comprehensive database characterising the reservoir and seal properties in the Rukwa succession. This work will involve compilation of legacy results compiled from past literature, theses and unpublished data, along with a focused analytical campaign on targeted samples designed to fill in gaps developing a robust property distribution database. The analytical campaign will be focus on a combination of techniques to analyse prospective reservoir sandstone samples and mudstone and bentonite seal units.
Facing the Unexpected: Improving Women’s Mental Health through Training to Address the Psychosocial Aspects of Prenatal Diagnosis (Old ID 28954)

This research project will produce novel knowledge that will be applied by TTU in the development of an online training program for health and allied health professionals. The training will enable these professionals to better support women and other pregnant people’s psychosocial health as they engage with processes related to receiving unexpected news of a fetal variation. The research project has 3 components: 1. survey research will be conducted with health and allied health professionals on training needs and interests; 2. lived experience co-design methods will be used to develop learning resources; 3. evaluation of the online training program.

This project brings together local knowledge and ecological expertise to develop a robust, restoration program for seagrass habitats at the Cocos Keeling Island’s southern atoll. Specifically, this project will work to improve our understanding of the natural dynamics and resilience of local seagrass habitats and the pressures acting on them to limit natural recovery, and use this information to identify, trial and evaluate restoration activities to drive seagrass recovery.

Neoliberal economic policies are fundamentally transforming the social landscapes of rural India, causing a deep agrarian crisis. The agrarian changes accentuate the unequal consequences for poor women and women in relation to: production (labour, tenure); livelihood and food security; access to and ownership of assets such as land and water and access to agriculture innovations and institutions. This multiscalar project investigates the causes and consequences of feminisation of agriculture in India's transitioning economy in order to understand how gender roles and relations are being re-shaped in communities and households in diverse socioeconomic and cultural contexts and agro-ecological areas.

Bioremediation Potential of Queensland Nickel Tailings Waste Water using Macroalgae for Renewable Bioproduct Development. (Old ID 22310)

This project will provide preliminary evaluation of the growth - and remediation potential of microalgal biofilms grown in Queensland Nickel's tailings waste water. Biofilms of endemic macroalgae will be grown in tailings waste water supplemented to varying levels of phosphate. Microalgae growth rates, metal removal capacity and algae bioproduct potential will be experimentally assessed. Results will enable process modelling for evaluating large-scale microalgal treatment of mine tailings waters and cogeneration of renewable bioproducts. Results will form the basis for partnership discussions aimed at securing external funding to determine optimal integration of microalgal biofilm technology into minerals processing industries.
New strategies for improved tuberculosis vaccines (Old ID 22533)

Tuberculosis is one of the most threatening infectious diseases worldwide due to the low efficiency of the only licensed anti-tuberculosis vaccine, BCG. This project aims to interrogate two previously neglected immune mechanisms and their potential to enhance vaccine-induced immunity by incorporating these mechanisms into new genetically modified BCG strains. We will also investigate alternative BCG vaccination routes to generate long-lived immune cells that can rapidly control the infection.
