Climate Smart Sugarcane Irrigation Partnerships (CSSIP) (Old ID 24754)
Bronson Philippa - Engineering
22 Aug 2018 - 30 Jun 2023
CSSIP will minimise nutrient runoff, improve soil health and increase wetlands water quality by facilitating the adoption of world-class irrigation practices in sugarcane farming systems. Currently, best practice irrigation is assisted by an Irrigation Decision Support Tool (IDST) that provides evidence-based advice. However, IDSTs have not reached their full potential. Firstly, they do not integrate short to medium term weather forecasts (e.g. weekly to multi-weekly forecasts). Secondly, IDSTs do not operate at a spatial scale relevant to farmers. CSSIP will incorporate the Bureau or Meteorology’s new high-resolution climate model into the Irrigation Decision Support Tool. Thirdly, IDSTs require substantial time in manual data entry, which can be alleviated using real-time monitoring via Internet of Things technologies. This will increase irrigation efficiency, reducing excessive runoff into river systems and onto the Reef, and, will help farmers save water and energy costs.
Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs Shallow Reef Monitoring 2018 (Old ID 24815)
The purpose of this contract is to survey shallow reef environments within the Elizabeth and Middleton reef national Marine Park, to assess the status and trends of reef environments and reef-associated organisms. Surveys will be conducted using methods established during prior surveys, undertaken at Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs in March 2011 and arch 2014.
A one health approach to establish surveillance strategies for Japanese encephalitis and zoonotic arboviruses in Papua New Guinea (Old ID 26565)
Paul Horwood - Vet Preventative Medicine
06 May 2019 - 30 Jun 2021
The project aim is to establish surveillance for JEV and other zoonotic arboviruses that affect the rural population of PNG. The major objectives are to: 1. Evaluate current detection methods to detect zoonotic arboviruses in the field and laboratory, and build capacity where gaps are identified. 2. Establish surveillance at selected sites using sentinel animal (pigs, chickens) and mosquito trapping 3. Develop linkages and coordination between human and animal health agencies. The primary outputs are to develop surveillance activities that contribute to early warning for public health and provide a better understanding of the ecological drivers of arboviruses in PNG.
Queensland threatened species listing. (Old ID 27253)
Conrad Hoskin - Zoology & Ecology
01 Jun 2021 - 30 Nov 2021
Humane Society International (HSi) is a charity that works towards “an ecologically sustainable and humane world for all animals”. This includes ensuring that threatened species are nominated to be listed under legislation. An opportunity has arisen for HSI to work with the Queensland Government to list a number of reptile species that are in dire need of conservation recognition. These are reptiles that I am an expert on, so they have contacted me to provide funding to me to help them write the nominations. I would use this funding to employ a recently graduated JCU PhD student to draft these nominations for me to then check and submit with HSI. Any left-over funding would be used for research on these threatened species. This is a ‘for the greater good’ project that I’d like to help out with.
Investigating combined stressors in bees: insecticides and thermal stress (Old ID 27283)
Insecticide use poses a risk to non-target insects including bees. The effects of these compounds is all the more worrying given that honey bees prefer nectar containing traces of the naturally derived insecticide class – the neonicotinoids. This project will expand upon previous bodies of work to investigate the preference of stingless bee species Tetragonula hockingsi when provided with the choice between an insecticide laced food source and a sucrose solution. This project will also explore the combined effects of insecticide exposure and increasing temperature on bees.
Pre-outbreak monitoring of the density, distribution and size-structure of crown-of-thorns starfish (CoTS) in the Great Barrier Reef (Old ID 27501)
This project will conduct annual field surveys (diver-based and eDNA) across reefs in the primary outbreak initiation region to reveal how the density, distribution and size-structure of COTS populations changes, providing field data to inform early warning and response in the lead up to the 2025 outbreak.
Assessment of fisher livelihoods and swim bladder trade in the Fly River, Papua New Guinea. (Old ID 27562)
Michael Grant - Marine Biology & Aquaculture
01 Jul 2022 - 30 Apr 2023
Conduct interview surveys with local fishers to gather information about use, values, and trade within the swim bladder fishery in the Fly River. Establish conservation efforts for sawfish through introduction of the Piku Biodiversity Network to Fly River communities.
AI-Powered Precision Farming: Mapping, Detection, Planning, and Spot Spraying (Old ID 31107)
Mohammad Jahanbakht - Engineering
01 Sep 2023 - 29 Nov 2024
High-tech solutions in agriculture offer many benefits for improved crop and land management. However, current methods rely heavily on human experts for monitoring and planning. To address this, we propose a state-of-the-art AI-based spraying strategy software that: • takes aerial images of the farm/land vegetation (using drones, planes, satellites, etc.) and detects field requirements, • generates a pre-spray map on GIS systems, considering the existing terrain topographies, • optimally plans the detailed spraying strategy and suggests one or a combination of proper spraying methods such as blanket, vehicular spot, or aerial spraying, and • whenever possible, effectively commands and controls appropriate devices to spray, such as drones, vehicles, people, etc. It might also receive feedback and correspondingly optimize the process/plan. This AI-Powered system helps farmers and producers precisely spray, saving costs and the environment.
Thermal stratification, overturning and mixing in riverine environments (Old ID 21650)
Wenxian Lin - Engineering
16 Jan 2015 - 15 Jan 2018
Thermal stratification is common in Australia's rivers due to our hot, drought-prone climate and high human demands relative to available supply, which has led to a significant reduction in flows relative to natural levels. Thermal stratification inhibits mixing, creating stagnant conditions characterised by low oxygen levels and increased concentrations of contaminants, leading to algal blooms, fish kills and systemic damage to ecosystems. The aim of this project is to develop predictive models for the effects of physical processes such as night-time cooling, wind, turbulence and currents n riverine thermal stratification. This will enable a more accurate determination of the flow rates required to maintain the health of our river systems.
Extending REDMAP to Queensland (Old ID 26980)
Jan Strugnell - Marine Biology & Aquaculture
30 Sep 2020 - 30 Sep 2022
REDMAP (Range Extension Database & Mapping project) is a citizen science initiative inviting fishers, divers and boater to submit photographs of unusual fish sightings to an interactive website (www.redmap.org.au). The project seeks to inform, engage and educate fishers, divers and boaters about fish that are shifting southwards in accordance with warming waters. This project will continue to roll out this initiative across Queensland through public talks at fishing and diving clubs in conjunction with the distribution of brochures, dive plans and stickers highlighting the fish species for citizen scientists to keep a look out for while they are on or in the water.
