Due to the porous nature of roofing tile systems, pressure equalization effects must be considered in estimating wind-induced loads. However, these effects (and therefore net wind loading) are not well understood for various roof zones and the range of tile configurations in the global housing market. To better characterize these effects, IBHS will conduct full-scale wind tunnel testing on North American and Australian roofing tile systems. The CTS will assist with testing design, data analysis and reporting.

This project aims to highlight the exploration potential in the Mary Kathleen Domain of the Mt Isa Inlier by providing key mineralisation insights that can assist mining companies to plan their exploration strategy for better targeting and enhance the potential for new discoveries. To achieve this, the project has three main objectives: (1) Establish the extent, character and timing of the dominant magmatic epochs in the Mary Kathleen Domain of the Mt Isa Inlier (2) Develop an understanding of the tectono-magmatic history of the Mary Kathleen Domain and its links to metallogenesis; (3) Explore the applicability of magma fertility concepts as a tool for exploration for a variety of deposit types.
Securing the future of Australia’s threatened tropical mountain flora for science and society (Old ID 25045)

This project will enable us to secure the future of Australia’s climate-threatened tropical mountaintop plants. We will do this by building a multi-strategy ex-situ conservation reserve to ‘backup’ at-risk wild populations and support research, display and education. Our novel research on seed banking strategies, genetic diversity and plant tolerance of extreme climates will ensure that the reserve collections, distributed across multiple Botanic Gardens and Seed Banks along Australia’s east coast, incorporate high redundancy, are genetically and physiologically diverse, and climatically matched to wild habitat.

Respiratory disease, fevers, and sepsis are common in FNQ and treatment often requires admission to hospital. These infections have many different causes, and diagnosing them requires multiple tests that take weeks to perform. Consequently, patients are treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics before a pathogen is identified, leading to poorer outcomes for the patient and contributing to the spread of antibiotic-resistant infections. We will trial new genome sequencing technology as a point-of-care diagnostic test for fever, sepsis, and pneumonia at Cairns Hospital, and test the hypothesis that this approach will increase the proportion of infections that are diagnosed and reduce the time-to-diagnosis.

Travel to Vietnam to meet with R&D collaborators from government and industry to scope the R&D priorities in hybrid grouper aquaculture in Vietnam. For the scoping study – total 10 days each for J Cobcroft and L Nankervis (2 days for background reading prior to the trip; 2 days travel between home base and Vietnam; 4 days scoping study meetings and information gathering with proposed team members and others in Vietnam; 2 days for writing-up scoping study report). After this scoping study, prepare the ACIAR Concept Proposal for submission by 30 June 2020, full proposal development and review July 2020 -April 2021, for successful proposal contracting by 30 June 2021 and project start 1 July 2021.

A new ACIAR scoping project is being prepared in support of possible new ACIAR investment in tropical rock lobster (Panulirus homarus and Panulirus ornatus) aquaculture in Indonesia. A thorough review of literature is proposed in order to prepare for the nutrition and feeds development component of the project, ensuring that we apply the learnings from previous projects and current scientific literature. The review will inform the detail of the experimental approach in a proposed new ACIAR project, which will benefit from advanced planning prior to the project start to maximise outcomes (possible start in July 2021). In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented any scoping travel to Indonesia in the short-term, providing opportunity to complete a review and facilitating best use of resources once the project starts.
Immersive virtual reality in a northern Queensland haemodialysis unit: A cross-over randomised controlled feasibility trial. (Old ID 27236)

This study will explore the feasibility and acceptability of an immersive VR experience for patients attending a north Queensland haemodialysis service and provide information to inform a multi-centre randomised controlled trial. Over the 4 week intervention period, participants will be offered a headset with vision of the local natural environment and with audio. Outcomes will be measured by participants: acceptability and usability of VR; attendance at scheduled dialysis sessions and adherence to lifestyle modifications; wellbeing, anxiety and depression; adverse events such as nausea. The feasibility and acceptability of the equipment from the clinicians’ perspectives will also be explored.
