Sustaining Communities of Practice of Civil Society Organisations for Marine Resource Management in Indonesia
Amy Diedrich
17 Feb 2025 - 31 Dec 2026
This two-year project aims to support the operational and capacity needs of the Communities of Practice (CoPs) of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) initiated in Indonesia in Phase I of Maritime 2.0 with the goal of enabling the CoPs to achieve financial and organisational sustainability upon project completion. These activities will consolidate the aim of Phase I Maritime 2.0 which was to foster improved collaboration between CSOs and government to strengthen marine resource management and maritime policies and local level implementation.
Understanding specificity and flexibility in coral symbioses
Mia Hoogenboom
01 Jul 2024 - 30 Jun 2027
Coral health is underpinned by complex interactions between the host animal and its symbiotic partners, probably the most important of which are the photosynthetic alga. The interactions of reef-building corals with their photosymbionts are thought to be highly specific, but as yet the bases of this specificity and the nature of the dialogue that must occur during the establishment of a mutualistic relationship are unclear. By making use of model systems and recent advances in DNA sequencing technology, this study seeks to understand these molecular interactions, specifically in the context of some unique features on both sides of the interaction.
Testing a biopesticide on yellow crazy ants
Peter Yeeles
28 Feb 2025 - 29 Aug 2025
This project will test the acute toxicity of a newly developed biopesticide on yellow crazy ants (Anoplolepis gracilipes). Synthetic pesticides are currently used for yellow crazy ant management, but have some significant drawbacks including a high risk of non-target effects. Biopesticides have scope for minimising non-target impacts with lower eco-toxological risk profiles than their synthetic counterparts.

A View from the South: exploring Southern Ocean mercury cycling and what it means for the UN Minamata Convention
Jenny Fisher
01 Jul 2023 - 30 Jun 2025
In December 2021, Australia ratified the UN Minamata Convention on Mercury, joining more than 130 countries committed to protecting human health and the environment from toxic mercury pollution. Now, the global community has turned its attention to evaluating the effectiveness of the Convention. The Southern Ocean region is critical for evidence-based effectiveness evaluation, but atmosphere-ocean mercury cycling in this area is highly uncertain. Bringing together a team of French and Australian mercury science experts, this project will use a suite of models and observations to probe critical uncertainties in the Southern Ocean and bring new insights to global mercury cycling.
