Biography
Dr Zilmiyah
Kamble works with James Cook University, Singapore as a Senior Lecturer in
Hospitality and Tourism management. Her International Academic and Tourism
Industry work experience spans over five different countries (UK,
Seychelles, India, Malaysia and currently Singapore).
Her teaching and curriculum development expertise
is diverse ranging from operations to management perspectives in Tourism,
Hospitality, and Events at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Dr
Zilmiyah has a PhD in
Hospitality and Tourism Management from Taylor’s University, Malaysia, a Higher
Education Teaching Certificate from Harvard University and over 13 years of
international teaching experience. She has served as a chair for Board of
Studies, led curriculum development in Tourism, Hospitality and Events at
various institutions and consulted for training initiatives at the Seychelles
Ministry of Tourism.
As a
researcher, Dr Zilmiyah is a qualitative researcher, whose ontological and
epistemological beliefs are framed in the constructivism and critical theory
paradigms. Her diverse research interests include tourism planning, sociology
of tourism, destination management, sustainable tourism, community-based
tourism, besides hospitality management.
She has
been invited as keynote speaker, chaired conference sessions and is also a
member of the scientific committee for conferences in Tourism and Hospitality
such as Asia-Euro Conference, ICSIMAT and ACSTHB. Dr Zilmiyah is also
actively involved with leading journals as a reviewer of research papers and
gained experience through membership of the scientific committees for
conferences. She is a continuing reviewer for the BEST EN Building Excellence
in Sustainable Tourism Education Network and ad-hoc reviewer for the Asia
Pacific Journal of Tourism Research, the Asia Pacific Journal of
Innovation in Tourism and Hospitality, Current issues in Tourism and
the Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure, and Events.
She has
supervised research in both hospitality and tourism, drawing on her
considerable industry experience and qualifications in hospitality as well as
tourism. Dr. Zilmiyah is interested in prospective PhD candidates with research
interest in Tourism planning, destination governance, social impacts of
tourism, niche or special interest tourism and hospitality management.

Teaching Interests
Dr Zilmiyah's teaching
interests are aligned to teaching students tourism, planning, development, and
governance of tourism, through a critical lens with recommendations towards a
more community based, sustainable and regenerative tourism. As a tourism
and hospitality academic, with industry experience prior to joining academics, she
understands the needed competencies, skills, epistemology in tourism and
hospitality plus the appropriate pedagogical approach. Her aim is to encourage
students to be reflective, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills
in tourism, hospitality and events theory and practice. She teaches a diverse
portfolio of subjects and developed curriculum across tourism, hospitality and
events managements including Destination Management and Planning, Tourism Systems
analysis, Tourism & Hospitality Operations Management, Gastronomy, Food and
beverage management, and events management.
