Team teaching: an imperative for an international curriculum in hospitality management

Abstract

The hospitality industry is present in all countries, irrespective of size and development. It is an internationalized business in every sense, whether it is the employees, target market or even ownership. Hospitality management degree curriculum proposes to present future managers who have acquired the essential skills, to work in an increasingly demanding industry. The delivery of these programme needs to be interactive, keeping in mind the diverse students, faculty expertise both theoretical and practical, global perspective and current industry trends. This exploratory paper aims at highlighting the significance of the utilization of 'team teaching' in delivering a curriculum in international hospitality management. This article is in three parts; first, it will review fundamentals, benefits and challenges of team teaching through various publications to demonstrate an understanding of team teaching and its benefits; secondly, it will ascertain the essentials of an international hospitality curriculum through the comparison of various courses in international hospitality management; thirdly it will illustrate the use of 'team teaching' in an international hospitality curriculum by providing various approaches and concluding that the effective use of 'team teaching' strategy in hospitality curriculum can enhance the 'international factor' which is very vital in management in the current hospitality industry.
