Biography
Stewart Lockie is Distinguished Professor of Sociology and
Director of the Cairns Institute at James Cook University. He is a Fellow of
the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia and Adjunct Professor at the
Australian National University.
Professor Lockie’s research addresses climate adaptation, regional sustainability transitions, social impact assessment, environmental policy and standards, and resource management in the food and agriculture sectors. Since appointment at JCU in 2014, Prof Lockie has secured over AUS$20 million in external grants supporting research on climate adaptation, drought resilience, regional development, and higher education in the Pacific.
Understanding and informing a range of potential
futures is a key theme in Professor Lockie’s research and professional service. He is a member of the
Wet Tropics Management Authority’s Scientific
Advisory Committee and was a founding member of both the Cairns-Port Douglas
Reef Hub and Wet Tropics Restoration Alliance. Recent publications include Failure or Reform? Market-Based Policy Instruments for Sustainable Agriculture and Resource Management, published in 2020 by Routledge, London. Prof Lockie. He is also Foundation Editor of the journal Environmental Sociology and past-President of the International Sociological Association’s Research Committee on Environment and Society.
