Improving Bowel Cancer Care in Indigenous Populations in Central Queensland: Co-design, Implementation, and Evaluation of New Models of Care
Bowel cancer is a major health issue in Australia, particularly for Indigenous Australians, who face higher rates of advanced cancer diagnoses and worse outcomes due to systemic barriers to healthcare. This project aims to co-design, implement, and evaluate culturally appropriate care models to improve bowel cancer screening, prevention, and management. Key goals include developing a model that increasing screening rates, enabling earlier diagnoses, and reducing cancer-related death.
Nursing and Allied Health Graduate Outcomes Tacking (NAHGOT) Study
The Nursing and Allied Health Graduate Outcomes Tracking (NAHGOT) Project is a large-scale longitudinal study designed to examine the practice destinations and workforce trajectories of nursing and allied health graduates across Australia (Sutton et al., 2021). Developed through collaboration between multiple University Departments of Rural Health (UDRHs) and partner universities, NAHGOT provides robust, evidence-based insights into how education and training experiences influence graduate employment outcome, particularly in rural, regional, and remote areas.
Campdrafting in Rural Australia: An Examination of Economic, Social, Cultural, and Health Benefits for Rural and Remote Australians
Campdrafting in Rural Australia: An Examination of Economic, Social, Cultural, and Health Benefits for Rural and Remote Australians examines the role of campdrafting as a distinctive Australian rural sport and cultural tradition. The study explores how participation in and attendance at campdrafting events contribute to local economies, strengthen social connections and community cohesion, preserve rural heritage and traditions, and support physical activity and mental wellbeing. It also considers the broader significance of campdrafting for community identity, social inclusion, and quality of life in rural and remote Australia, including its potential to support community resilience and rural sustainability.
Evaluation of the Rural Immersion Placement Program - Allied Health
Evaluation of the Rural Immersion Placement Program – Allied Health evaluates the effectiveness and impact of rural immersion placements in preparing allied health students for professional practice in rural and remote settings. The study explores students’ learning experiences, clinical skills development, interprofessional collaboration, understanding of rural health needs, and perceptions of working in rural communities.
Occupational therapy student-led falls prevention clinic for community-dwelling elderly people in rural and remote areas: A pilot study (H9147)
Occupational Therapy Student-Led Falls Prevention Clinic for Community-Dwelling Older People in Rural and Remote Areas: A Pilot Study evaluates the feasibility and potential benefits of an occupational therapy student-led falls prevention clinic for older adults living independently in rural and remote communities. The study examines the delivery of falls risk assessments, identification of environmental and functional risk factors, and provision of tailored interventions to reduce falls risk and promote independence, safety, and healthy ageing. It also explores the value of supervised student-led clinics in providing accessible allied health services while supporting student learning and clinical skill development. Findings will inform the feasibility of implementing and evaluating similar service models in underserved rural and remote
Multidisciplinary Allied Health Student Placements with Primary Health Care Providers
Multidisciplinary Allied Health Student Placements with Primary Health Care Providers examines the implementation and value of multidisciplinary allied health student placements within primary healthcare settings in rural and remote communities. The study explores how integrating students from different allied health disciplines into primary care supports interprofessional learning, collaboration, clinical skill development, and understanding of holistic, person-centred care. It also investigates the experiences of students, clinical supervisors, and primary healthcare providers, including the benefits and challenges of delivering student-led services under supervision. Findings will inform the development of sustainable placement models that enhance health professional education, strengthen primary healthcare service capacity, and improve access to allied health services in rural and remote Australia.
Experiences of Nurses Who Completed a New Graduate Nurse Program in Rural Queensland
Experiences of Nurses Who Completed a New Graduate Nurse Program in Rural Queensland explores the experiences and perspectives of nurses who have completed a new graduate nurse program in rural Queensland. The study examines their transition from student to registered nurse, including their clinical confidence, professional development, workplace support, supervision, and preparedness for rural nursing practice. It also investigates the challenges and opportunities associated with working in rural healthcare settings, factors influencing job satisfaction and workforce retention, and nurses’ intentions to remain in rural practice. Findings will inform improvements to graduate nurse programs and support strategies to strengthen nursing workforce recruitment, development, and retention in rural and remote Queensland.
