Harvest Road Oceans Pty Ltd wants to undertake a genetic audit of potential broodstock for use in a future selective breeding program for Akoya pearl oysters focusing primarily on oyster growth, shell depth and meat yield. Before such a program commences, it is vital to establish that the genetic diversity represented in the current broodstock population is sufficient to ensure long-term exploitation of genetic potential over subsequent generations of breeding. Therefore, this project aims to generate the preliminary data needed to undertake a genetic audit, estimate relatedness between animals from the current farm cohorts, generate genetic parameters and make recommendations on appropriate breeding scenarios for Harvest Road Oceans Pty Ltd.
Application of new prawn viral strain and prevalence data to determine viral infection risk (Old ID 24887)

The project will monitor the presence and viral load of a number of endemic prawn viruses in farmed prawns collected at Seafarm. The data collected will be used to prepare evidence based management protocols to improve biosecurity management on the farm.

This funding will be used to support our research on the capacity of coral reefs to cope with climate change. Specifically, in 2019 we will examine the rate of coral replenishment along the length of the Great Barrier Reef, in the aftermath of the two bleaching events in 2016 and 2017. The objective is to compare stock-recruitment relationships today with earlier, to better understand the recoverability of reefs.

Aquaculture of the tropical lobster Panulirus ornatus is a recently commercialised industry in Australia. Recent review of nutritional knowledge of this species has revealed significant limitations to commercialisation of feeds, including data on key nutrient requirements, raw materials and feed processing. This project will begin to address these limitations, placing this industry on the path towards improved sustainable development.
Evaluating Australian grains potential for Aquafeed in SE Asia (Old ID 31119)

Australia produces a range of grains and legumes that are routinely used for aquafeed in Australia, however their uptake in SE Asian markets appears to be limited. This project investigates opportunities and constraints of Australian grains and legumes in aquafeed production in Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. It consists of a desktop study and report on opportunities and directions in this export market, followed by engagement with aquafeed specialists in these areas and scoping opportunities for research to test our assumptions around the most likely products in local feed production in-country.
Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs Shallow Reef Monitoring 2018 (Old ID 24815)

The purpose of this contract is to survey shallow reef environments within the Elizabeth and Middleton reef national Marine Park, to assess the status and trends of reef environments and reef-associated organisms. Surveys will be conducted using methods established during prior surveys, undertaken at Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs in March 2011 and arch 2014.

This project will conduct annual field surveys (diver-based and eDNA) across reefs in the primary outbreak initiation region to reveal how the density, distribution and size-structure of COTS populations changes, providing field data to inform early warning and response in the lead up to the 2025 outbreak.

REDMAP (Range Extension Database & Mapping project) is a citizen science initiative inviting fishers, divers and boater to submit photographs of unusual fish sightings to an interactive website (www.redmap.org.au). The project seeks to inform, engage and educate fishers, divers and boaters about fish that are shifting southwards in accordance with warming waters. This project will continue to roll out this initiative across Queensland through public talks at fishing and diving clubs in conjunction with the distribution of brochures, dive plans and stickers highlighting the fish species for citizen scientists to keep a look out for while they are on or in the water.
Coastal wetland restoration options investigation. (Old ID 27446)

Coastal restoration aims to improve and protect sensitive and important wetland areas. While restoration projects are underway most are small scale, and to achieve targets that will help government deliver on the Reef 2050 plan objectives we need to initiate large scale project sites. This project site is set to become the largest restoration site in north Queensland, and our team will be responsible for the collection of background science to support this project site. The data generated will be used to support the development of an options report outlining the full potential of restoration outcomes.
