Biography
Dr Scott Morrissey is a marine ecologist and molecular biologist whose work focuses on advancing practical tools for monitoring and managing coastal marine ecosystems and their inhabitants. Based at the Centre for Tropical Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Research (TropWATER), James Cook University, he utilises field-based survey methods to improve mapping and monitoring of tropical environments. He works closely with TO's and Indigenous ranger groups to map and monitor sea county across Northern Australia.
Scott also uses emerging molecular approaches, such as environmental DNA (eDNA), to detect and study elusive marine organisms, with a particular focus on box jellyfish. He has developed laboratory and field-based assay for the detection and study of the Australian Box Jellyfish, Chironex fleckeri, and have developed biophysical models to investigate and understand the transport and dispersion dynamics of eDNA particles.
Scott is also currently the Marine Creature Advisor for Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) where he provides advice and training regarding all things jellyfish, crocodiles, and sharks.
