Use of eDNA to detect and study deadly box jellyfish

Abstract

This thesis explored the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) to detect and study box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) across key life-history stages. A highly specific eDNA assay enabled detection of medusae and polyps, uncovering spatially restricted populations. Additionally, biophysical modelling provided insights into the dispersal dynamics of eDNA, informing spatiotemporal detection limits. These findings advance ecological understanding and showcase eDNA's use as an ecological sampling tool.
