Geology and Ore Potential of the Tommy Creek Block, Mount Isa Inlier (Old ID 22960)

The objective of the proposal is to establish a new research project to understand the geological evolution of the prospective Tommy Creek Block, located near Cloncurry, utilising the expertise of geological staff and research facilities / resources at JCU, Cardiff University, and our industry partners Mount Isa Mines (MIM - Glencore and GBM Resources. These research partnerships will be further strengthened through this project. The project is designed to deliver benefits to the industry partners by providing an improved understanding of the geology of an active mineral exploration region, which will directly lead to better strategies for exploration and hence, enhanced prospects of exploration success. Such future mineral resource discovery is crucial to sustain the economic prosperity of Queensland. The project will provide industry with highly trained graduates with the specific skills sets needed to develop successful career paths in the minerals industry.
Coral Reef Health in the Coral Sea Marine Park (Old ID 24771)

A number of coral reefs occur in the Australian Marine Parks estate, particularly within the Coral Sea Marine Park (CSMP). In 2016 and 2017, coral reefs in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and CSMP were impacted by a mass global coral bleaching event. Regular surveys of coral bleaching and associated reef health in the CSMP are needed to inform future marine park management over the next three years to either enable comparisons against historical baselines where bleaching has previously occurred, or set new baselines for areas that aren’t bleached but may be in the future.
Lobster Aquaculture Groote Eylandt Phase 2A - Nursery (Old ID 27401)

This project is part of a research and development program to establish tropical rock lobster aquaculture at Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory. The project complements Phase 1 (lobster seed assessment, on-going) and will support development of nursing of seed lobsters. The project will include components of both research and development, examining and trialling various technologies in the sea and on land to nurture small lobsters from the puerulus stage to a size of up to 100g. The project includes aspects of aquaculture technology development, training, extension, social science, economics and marketing. The project will provide the Anindilyakwa Land Council with the means and confidence to establish commercial lobster nursery operations. The project represents the first part (Part A) of nursery development and there is an expectation of a follow-on project (Part B) to continue the nursery development through 2022.

The project is a key initiative under the Flathead for the Future program. In broad terms, the Project aims to enhance the sustainability of the Tasmanian flathead fishery through management settings and responsible fishing initiatives. In doing so, the project will better understand flathead fishers to: 1) develop settings that are widely acceptable, and; 2) inform the development, promotion and targeting of engagement and outreach activities. PI will provide expert input to profiling and segmentation work undertaken from past rec fishing datasets that are available within Tasmanian and will also provide guidance and input on a dedicated 'flathead fishing' survey to be conducted as part of the project.
NESP 3.10 – A partnership approach to filling key knowledge gaps on dugongs in northern Australia using novel technologies (Old ID 28964)

In Australia, the dugong is protected under the EPBC Act 1999 as a listed migratory, and listed marine species, it is also a Matter of National Environmental Significance. The dugong is culturally significant to the coastal Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of northern Australia and has a high biodiversity value. This project includes five activities that will contribute to addressing key knowledge gaps about the spatial and temporal patterns in the distribution, abundance, connectivity and health of dugong populations. The project is designed to inform management in several regions of high value habitat across northern Australia. Transversal to the activities described below is a strong partnership approach with Traditional Owners and members of the wider community. The project will be co-designed, co-produced and will co-deliver research and monitoring outputs. The studies will utilise and advance emerging technologies (e.g., aerial images collected from planes and drones, Artificial Intelligence, population genomics) with the ultimate goal of enhancing data quality, reducing research and monitoring costs, and increasing accessibility of monitoring tools to non-experts.

The strategic goal of the collaboration is to pool expertise and resources in order to accelerate the adoption of continuous flow photochemical reactors by the fine chemical industry. For each party, the objectives of the collaboration are: For Vapourtec to benefit from the photochemical reaction knowledge and expertise at MO-JCU together with the academic and industrial contacts that may be made available through MO-JCU. For MO-JCU to have the opportunity to trial photochemical reactions on the equipment that Vapourtec makes available, this will include equipment up to pilot scale.

Engaging a remote radiologist may assist with overcoming many challenges associated with providing health services in a regional, rural or remote location. This project seeks to ensure that the alternative model of service delivery is appropriate for consumers, evidence-based and safe. Specifically, this project will assess how the new remote radiology model affects: - Patient safety - Patient acceptability - Staff acceptability of new model of service provision - The safe, efficient organisation of BreastScreen services

This project involves surveys on remote sandstone country on Cape York, with the purpose of discovering new species of plants. All discoveries will be written upin the scientific and popular literature and media. The data gathered will contribute significantly to the knowledge of the biodiversity of tropical Australia and will underpin effective management and conservation planning.

Tropospheric ozone is the third most significant anthropogenic greenhouse gas and has been shown to reduce global plant productivity though oxidative stress. Although tropical forests have been highlighted as being potentially being vulnerable to this ozone damage, few studies have looked at role of ozone in these regions. This project will provide comprehensive measurements of the effects of ozone on plant physiology in tropical forests and use this new knowledge to parameterise global land-surface models.
Providing natural heritage technical advice on World Heritage (Old ID 25019)

To ensure that Australia meets its obligations as a world Heritage committee member by conducting technical natural heritage research and analysis on the sites that are subject to World Heritage inscription and state of conservation decisions in 2018 by: 1) reviewing world Heritage Centre documents that relate to the site inscription nominations and state of conservation assessments; and 2) providing expert natural heritage technical advice to the Australian Government at the 42nd World Heritage Committee Session in Bahrain.
