Biography
Dr Putu Liza Kusuma Mustika ("Icha") obtained her PhD from James Cook University in Australia in December 2011 and was awarded the title in April 2012. Her PhD was on the sustainability of dolphin watching tourism in Bali, Indonesia. Ever since, she has been doing her own works with her colleagues on sustainable tourism, cetacean watching tourism, marine mammal by-catch, marine mammal protected areas and the management of stranded marine mammals. Since 2015, Icha has been involved in the delivery of at least 20 subjects and over 300 students at JCU. To date, she has (co)authored 26 journal articles and two book chapters. Icha is currently the Course Coordinator of the Bachelor of Environmental Science, a cotutelle program between JCU, the National University of Vanuatu, and University of New Caledonia. The program received the 2024 JCU Award for Excellence in the category of “Community Engagement”. Icha also received $110,000 in 2025 and 2026 for the New Colombo Plan program for the climate change study in Vanuatu.
Icha is also active in assisting the Indonesian government in fostering the management of marine mammals, particularly whales and dolphins, in the Archipelago. She is currently the database coordinator for the whale stranding initiative in Indonesia, as well as leading a marine mammal-focused NGO in Indonesia (‘CETASI’ – Cetacean Sirenian Indonesia).
Since 2015, Icha has been involved in the delivery of at least 20 subjects at JCU. To date, she has (co)authored 26 journal articles (20 papers in Q1 journals, lead author in 13 papers) and two book chapters. Icha's Scopus FWCI is 1.23, her Scopus h-index is 15, and her citations per publication is 16.9.
Since finishing her PhD, she has (co)raised more than AUD 1.4 million in competitive research funding, including from the World Bank. She has completed the supervision of one honours student, one masters student and one PhD student. She currently co-supervises two PhD students, two Masters of Marine Biology students and one Honours student at JCU.
