Biography
I grew up in western Victoria, where my interest in agriculture and veterinary science first developed. I graduated with a degree in Veterinary Science from the University of Melbourne in 1986 and began my career working in rural mixed practices, predominantly with beef and dairy cattle. In 1996, I completed a PhD at James Cook University (JCU), focusing on the synchronisation of oestrus in Bos indicus cattle.
From 1996 to 1998, I undertook a residency in animal reproduction (theriogenology) at North Carolina State University, where I also achieved American Board Certification in Theriogenology. Upon returning to Australia, I worked as a research fellow at the University of Melbourne (1999–2001), contributing to the development of controlled breeding programs for large dairy herds.
Following this, I became a registered veterinary specialist in reproduction and worked in private practice as a company director for a bovine reproduction consultancy service. In December 2005, I joined James Cook University as a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Reproduction. Since then, I have played a key role in developing JCU’s veterinary science program and have focused my teaching and research on veterinary reproduction. I also completed a Master of Education to further enhance my teaching practice.
In 2024, I was appointed Academic Head of Veterinary Sciences at JCU. I am privileged to lead a dedicated team of educators and researchers, and to support a vibrant community of students who are passionate about becoming outstanding veterinarians.
