Biography
Dr. Jarrod Guppy is an early-career researcher specializing in applied animal breeding, reproductive biology, and genomics, leading the Aquaculture Breeding and Reproductive Technologies Lab at James Cook University. With a Ph.D. in Aquaculture Genetics, Dr. Guppy has held key industry, teaching and research roles including Broodstock Facility Manager and Lecturer.
Awarded the ARC Early Career Researcher Industry Fellowship, Dr. Guppy focuses on developing innovative reproductive methods for aquaculture, with a particular emphasis on barramundi breeding. Dr. Guppy has been successful in acquiring over $1.5 million of funding. His teams research spans gamete quality, reproductive control, hatchery production, selective breeding, and genomics to optimize breeding outcomes and enhance aquaculture production.
Dr. Guppy’s expertise extends across a variety of species, including barramundi, black tiger shrimp, banana prawns, grouper, pearl oysters, and abalone, with additional work in the development of novel aquaculture species. Through his research, he aims to drive innovation and aid the on-going growth the aquaculture industry.
Dr. Guppy teaches into a range of undergraduate and masters courses in Aquaculture degrees, coordinating Aquaculture: Propagation and Aquaculture: Hatchery Techniques subjects. Dr. Guppy co-coordinates the Masters of Science (Aquaculture) Major.
Dr. Guppy has available research projects and placements for interested students and welcomes interested research and industry partnerships.
