This is a novel and innovative project to scientifically exam,ine under-explored aspects of learning that can improve the educational performance of Indigenous students in tertiary studies. The aim of this project is to contribut much needed research evidence of Indigenous persistence in learning and academic performance, and to deepen knowledge and understandings of what works for Indigenous students as they engage in formal learning situations.

Navigating the Carceral Interface: Applying trauma informed and cultrually-grounded responses to improving the safety and quality of life of young Indigenous people who come into contact with the carceral system

This project will investigate how Indigenous community-controlled organisations develop and implement culturally and community grounded programs, that can guide and improve the safety and wellbeing of young Indigenous people between the ages of 10-24, and how these programs might be improved. We are focusing on this age group specifically, due to the transition between childhood, adolescence and young adulthood are the population group at highest risk of being incarcerated. Three sites in the state of Queensland have been selected include Thursday Island, Cairns, and Rockhampton

A place based model for Aboriginal community-led solutions

This project aims to investigate the unique approaches used by Aboriginal community controlled organisations to enable community ownership of holistic health and social programs in complex community settings. Focusing on a close analysis of regional south eastern NSW, the research will produce a robust theorisation of a place based model for Aboriginal community-led solutions to health and social issues.This will be inclusive of innovative mechanisms for the transfer and sharing of learnings to other locations. Utilising a Indigenist research methodology and a community based participatory action research approach, the Aboriginal led investigator team will work in close partnership with Aboriginal community organisations in NSW, WA and Qld.

ARC Centre of Excellence for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

ARC Centre of Excellence for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Eliminating violence against women is one of the major challenges of the 21st century. Awareness of the problem has grown exponentially, but solutions to it have not. This Centre aims to transform our understanding of the problem by examining the structural drivers that cause and compound violence against women, and pioneering new, evidence-based approaches to radically improve policy and practice across Australia and the Indo-Pacific. The Centre mobilises survivor-centric and Indigenous methodologies, interdisciplinary collaborations, and Indo-Pacific partnerships to deliver scalable approaches to eliminate violence against women across the legal, security, economic, health, and political systems of Australia and the region.

ARC Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures. The proposed Centre aims to generate a new direction in knowledge creation based on Aboriginal- and Torres Strait Islander-led approaches to managing Land and Sea Country. The Centre expects to make a legacy contribution by developing complementary Indigenous and Western knowledge frameworks for modelling environmental, cultural, and historical change in Australia over the last millennium and into the near future. Expected outcomes focus on sustainable Indigenous land and sea management planning for future decades. Benefits include improved forecasting of the trajectory of environmental change, an increase in the capacity of Indigenous research, creation of a pipeline for Indigenous students into research, and evidence-based policy-making.

This Centre will create a world-class interdisciplinary research programme to understand Australia's unique biodiversity and heritage. The Centre will track the changes to Australia's environment to examine the processes responsible for the changes and the lessons that can be used to continue to adapt to Australia's changing environment. The Centre will support connections between the sciences and humanities and train future generations of researchers to deal with future global challenges and inform policy in an interdisciplinary context.

Genomics of lung cancer in Indigenous people of North Queensland (Old ID 26764)

Cancer genomic profiling is a major determinant of chemotherapy selection for non-small cell lung cancer and is widely used internationally. Indigenous genomes carry ~10X more uncharacterised DNA sequence variation than people of European heritage. THHS is currently trialling the use of whole exome sequencing, instead of the existing 4 gene panel, to base choice of targeted therapies in lung cancer. This creates an opportunity to study whether the cancer-associated variation currently being used to select therapies is adequate, and if not, these data will form the foundation for an NHMRC funding application to identify improved markers.
