Profile

Trina is a Computer Scientist and an Adjunct Professor with the discipline of IT. Trina is the President of the Australian Council of Deans of ICT (ACDICT) that aims to promote and advance ICT education, research and scholarship on behalf of Australian universities.

Trina's research interests focus predominately on semantic technologies, sensor technologies, data and knowledge management, collective intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT). Semantic technologies (linked data) are a subset of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that enables the integration of knowledge, information and disparate data. She works predominantly in multi-disciplinary research projects that have included other disciplines such as Health Science, Archaeology, Marine and Environmental Science, Conservation Management, Aquaculture, AgTech, Economics, Business, among many others.

Trina's current research projects include: semantic enablement of IoT and collective intelligence for more efficient water conservation resource management; data and AI driven virtual reality environments; and combining text mining with semantic context for intelligent data extraction from the information found on the Web (current applications are in the mining and tourism sectors).

IT@JCU 2019 Design Sprint [Channel Nine news, WIN News] - This year the sprint theme was "Disaster Management" and we had a change of location to the Quayside Cruise Terminal at the Townsville Port Authority. The Sprint has again grown! The theme was significant given the number of natural disasters recently - Floods, bushfires, drought, heatwaves, etc. The students came up with some very unique and innovative technology solutions to manage before, during and after disastrous events.
IT@JCU 2018 Design Sprint [Channel Nine, WIN 9/10/2018] - This year the sprint theme was "Sustainable Futures" and doubled in size to take over 2 hangars at the Townsville Airport with ~350 IT and Engineering students and over 30 local, national and international companies (most flew in to take part as mentors and/or subject matter experts in the 2-day event). IT@JCU 2017 Design Sprint [Channel Nine, WIN, Channel 7 News 11/10/2017] and [Townsville Bulletin, Herald Sun, 11/10/2017]- Students from James Cook University are working together with industry and Townsville City Council to come up with ways residents can be more sustainable with their water. The Design Sprint is embedded in the Bachelor of Information Technology’s Design Thinking strand that aims to build a culture of better software development practice.
IT@JCU Internship program partners with Glencore in a paid internship program while students are studying the Bachelor of IT. The project, which started in 2015, allows undergraduate IT students from 1st year onwards to gain real-world experience in their chosen field by working for Glencore’s Information Systems and Technology Department around their study commitments.

Community Engagement

Trina and her team host the Young ICT Explorers Event in collaboration with SAP and CSIRO. YICTE is a non-profit “Technology Fair” competition, which has been created by SAP to encourage school students from grades 4 to 12 to create their best Information and Communication Technology (ICT) related projects.
