Biography
Sue Devine is an Adjunct Professor at James Cook University.
Sue has worked in the Higher Education sector for more than 25 years, providing
strong leadership at the Discipline, College, and University levels. Her roles
have included Academic Head of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Chair of
the Discipline Learning and Teaching Committee, Course Coordinator of the
Master of Public Health, Postgraduate Academic Advisor for public health and
tropical medicine programs, and member of Academic Board.
With a strong background in public health and health promotion, Sue holds a Doctor of Public Health, a Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion, and a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching, complemented by extensive practical experience. She has played a key role in shaping public health curricula across undergraduate allied health degrees and postgraduate programs at JCU, contributing to the University’s reputation as a national and international leader in public health and tropical medicine education.
Sue’s professional interests include workforce capacity building in public health and health promotion, evaluation research, and the socio-environmental determinants of health.
Her excellence in teaching has been widely recognised. In 2015 she received both a James Cook University Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (overall winner at JCU) and a National Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning. In 2023 she was highly commended as a Primary Research Advisor for her demonstrated excellence in supervising doctoral and research masters candidates. In 2024, Sue was awarded the Australian Health Promotion Association’s Glen Paley Memorial Award in recognition of her significant contributions to supporting career pathways in health promotion, building professional capacity, and advocating for the profession.
