Parul Nigam

Dr Parul Nigam is a Senior Lecturer in Medicine at James Cook University and a specialist Endocrinologist and Obstetric Medicine Physician at Townsville University Hospital and Mater Health Services. She has been involved in medical education for more than 15 years and joined JCU in 2013, following earlier teaching roles with the University of Queensland.

Dr Nigam has held significant leadership roles within the JCU medical program. She has coordinated Year 5 Medicine for more than a decade and previously took responsibility for the whole Year 5 program across the Townsville, Cairns and Mackay clinical schools. She has led redesigns of Year 5 and Year 6 clinical rotations, expanded students’ exposure to acute and subspecialty medicine, and led changes in teaching delivery during COVID-19 that have continued within the program.

 A key focus of her academic work is developing future educators and strengthening the clinical teaching workforce. She mentors academic colleagues and students and teaches junior doctors, GPs, nurses and other health professionals across North Queensland.

Her clinical and research interests include diabetes in pregnancy, thyroid disease and obstetric medicine, with a particular interest in improving outcomes for regional and remote communities. In 2017, she co-established the Combined CKD–Diabetes Clinic at Mater Townsville, providing multidisciplinary care for patients from across North Queensalnd with complex diabetes, kidney disease and hypertension. 

Her research includes peer-reviewed publications, student supervision and clinical trials. She is currently involved in ONWARDS 11, an international multicentre Phase III trial of once-weekly insulin icodec in Type 1 diabetes. Her work has been presented nationally and internationally, including the latest one at the International Congress of Endocrinology in Kyoto, Japan in 2026.

Dr Nigam’s current academic focus is on regional medical education, developing future clinical teachers and strengthening the medical workforce across North Queensland. She is also interested in diabetes in pregnancy and improving access to specialist care and maternal-foetal outcomes in regional, remote and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
