Biography
Muhammad Islam is a PhD researcher in Information Technology at James Cook University (JCU), Australia, with research interests spanning Generative Artificial Intelligence, Multimodal AI, Computer Vision, Human Motion Understanding, and Data Science. His doctoral research focuses on developing intelligent and controllable digital humans through text, with particular emphasis on understanding, retrieving, and generating human motion from natural language.
His research explores how multimodal and generative AI can learn relationships between language, human movement, and body-part interactions. His current work investigates motion-language retrieval and hierarchical motion representations, aiming to enable AI systems to understand complex descriptions of human actions and translate them into meaningful digital human behaviours.
Muhammad has more than seven years of international experience in teaching and research across areas including Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Data Science, and Health Informatics. He has authored and co-authored research publications in areas including multimodal generative AI, AI-generated text detection, health informatics, Internet of Things, and intelligent systems. His work has appeared in international journals and conferences, including research published in Information Fusion and other peer-reviewed venues.
At James Cook University, Muhammad is affiliated with the Centre for Data Science and contributes to research activities involving Generative AI, Large Language Models, multimodal learning, and human-centred intelligent systems. He is also involved in teaching and peer-learning activities, supporting students in programming, data science, software engineering, and deep learning.
His broader research vision is to develop trustworthy, multimodal AI systems that can understand human language, behaviour, and movement, contributing to the next generation of intelligent digital humans and human-centred AI technologies.
