Biography
Dr Jasmine Jaffrés is a hydroclimatologist working full-time for C&R Consulting (Townsville) as principal environmental data analyst. Her research focuses on extreme weather events (floods, tropical cyclones, bushfires), catchment behaviour, water quality and data quality control, with an emphasis on real-world applications in water resource management and natural hazard assessment. Her interests extend further to other natural hazards (e.g. tsunamis) and the association between weather/climate variability and environmental disease.
Jasmine holds an adjunct position at James Cook University and maintains active research collaborations with colleagues at CSIRO, the Bureau of Meteorology, UWA and other universities. She has co-supervised a PhD candidate to completion at Central Queensland University (Assessing the spatial and temporal characteristics of cyclone tracks along the east coast of Australia) and has informally mentored several PhD candidates at James Cook University.
Data science / technical skills
Jasmine has extensive experience in the management of large datasets, application programming and statistical analyses, including non-parametric tests, dimension reduction and clustering. MATLAB is her programming language of choice, although she has also applied R, Python and Excel (XLSTAT) in previous studies, and has some exposure to deep-learning procedures. Recent project work includes streamflow analysis and pattern characterisation in the Fitzroy Basin (Qld). For data visualisation, she applies a wide range of software, including QGIS, ArcGIS and Adobe Illustrator.
