Biography
Carolyn Heward is a lecturer in the Master of Psychology (Clinical) program at James Cook University, where she plays a pivotal role in developing the next generation of clinical psychologists. Her approach to clinical education emphasises the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical skills, particularly in the areas of psychological assessment, case formulation, and treatment planning.
With extensive experience as a Clinical Psychologist within the Department of Defence and as a contracted health provider to the Australian Defence Force (ADF), Carolyn brings unique insights to the intersection of military culture and mental health. Her research focuses on military identity construction and its implications for psychological well-being among service members. This work is particularly relevant given current national discussions around veteran mental health and military culture reform.
As a qualitative researcher, Carolyn's doctoral research explores the nuanced ways Defence personnel construct and maintain their military identity within the Australian context. Her expertise spans both clinical practice and research methodology, allowing her to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application in military mental health care.
Beyond her military-focused work, Carolyn collaborates with A/Prof Wendy Li on mindfulness-based interventions, investigating the effectiveness of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) across diverse populations. This research complements her broader interest in innovative therapeutic approaches and clinical workforce development.
