Margery's Miscellany; or, What "All the World Must Allow": Children's Citizenship, Goody Two-Shoes and the Fairy-Tale Public Sphere

Goody Two-Shoes first appeared in a best-selling children’s book in 1765, The History of Little Goody Two Shoes. Rather than fairy tale or folklore, the story originated as a didactic moral tract but transmuted into fairy tale through the nineteenth century and its burgeoning entertainments for children. A threshold figure in children’s publishing and the history of literacy, and a liminal girl-woman, Goody Two-Shoes is an early exponent of what Courtney Weikle-Mills calls “imaginary citizenship”. She lingers in today’s public sphere where her imaginary citizenship haunts activist women and their stances on causes for social justice: Emma Watson, Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafsay.
