Back to India again: motivational insights from the travel career pattern approach

Abstract

Why do international tourists return, sometimes repeatedly, to one country? This study employed the travel career pattern model to provide insights about repeat tourism to India. Focusing on international tourists who do not have family or heritage links to the destination, the researchers collected questionnaire-based data in six Indian cities. Analysis of 13 motivational factors identified a shift in the travel career motives for tourists who made different numbers of repeat visits. Involvement with the site and personal development motives were key factors in the pattern of motivational changes. The findings extend our knowledge on repeat tourism and travel career patterns. In addition, the current study makes a unique contribution to exploring motivation for returning to ‘Incredible India’.
