Keeping tourist performances Indigenous in Bali and Bhutan

[Extract] Often, tourism policies not only facilitate tourists' arrivals but also protect local traditions from foreign influences. Two destination examples fit this category in somewhat dissimilar ways: Bali and Bhutan. A careful study of tourism policies concerning the (unlimited) number of tourists allowed in these destinations reveal tourism as a functional agent in the maintenance of local cultures. People in Bhutan and Bali have responded to cultural encounters in different ways to protect their cultural identity and create an aura of indigenousness. Indigenous here refers to the culture of the people living in the specific locality that is understood and embodied as original to the place. It also alludes to the idea of an exotic or traditional society in terms of touristic consumption. Recognising that Bali and Bhutan have populations that make up of various ethnic groups, our interest remains on those performances exhibited to tourists.
