Understanding and improving rare earth corrosion inhibitors (Old ID 26335)

This project aims to investigate rare earth corrosion inhibitors by an interdisciplinary program of chemistry and materials science. The project will generate new knowledge as to how rare earth corrosion inhibitors function and can be improved. Expected outcomes include a better understanding of inhibitor induced protective films and improved inhibitors. Significant benefits are eventually better protection of infrastructure from corrosion with greener inhibitors and a new bulk use for rare earths to aid Australia’s emerging rare earth industry.

Coastal wetlands are part of the broader Great Barrier Reef seascape and hold incredible environmental, cultural and economic value. This project will collect water quality and fish data to establish baseline conditions in Palm Creek, prior to coastal restoration works planned by industry partners. The outcomes of this survey and report will be presented to local community and will inform restoration decisions.
Evaluation framework for community rehabilitation services in remote northern Australia. (Old ID 26761)

An evaluation framework for community rehabilitation services in northern Australia will be developed. In Stage 1, a guiding framework will be devised following a systematic literature review. In Stage 2, routinely collected data relevant to the framework will be identified through data scoping. In Stage 3 the framework will be refined using a modified Delphi consensus approach and in Stage 4, tested for data accuracy and to determine rules for application. Processes and outcomes responsive to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities will be prioritised. This evaluation framework will enable continuous quality improvement, benchmarking against national standards and evidence-informed investment.
Optimising concurrent cognitive and physical Training in military personnel (OptiTrain) (Old ID 27134)

The combination of different training types is common for athletes looking to improving fitness and performance however, this combination or ‘concurrent training’ may impair overall training quality and adaptations. Using the theoretical basis of concurrent training, this project will clarify the effects of concurrent cognitive and physical training on cognitive and physical performance. Project outcomes will substantially aid in the development of appropriate training and maximization of performance for military personnel. This project is being conducted as part of the Human Performance Research network (HPRnet) program of studies.
Stakeholder perceptions of COTS management, socio-economic risks, opportunities and co-benefits (Old ID 27502)

The overarching aim of this project is to support the development and deployment of COTS management options that are perceived by the public and stakeholders as socially responsible and acceptable. Project objectives address public and stakeholder perceptions of COTS and COTS management, the distribution of social, economic and cultural opportunities and risks associated with COTS control, and the regulatory and policy implications of a limited number of novel control strategies including the use of semiochemical attractants. This research will be the first empirical examination of GBR stakeholder perspectives related to the species crown of thorns starfish.

This Project will extend the research of the original project by increasing the number of ABST calls recorded and improving understanding of the breeding and calling behaviour of ABST and improving surveillance (trapping and camera trapping approaches) for ABST. This Project will also facilitate provision of advice to overseas collaborators in undertaking studies of ABST under the first contract mentioned above. Additional complementary data collection and/or research areas may be undertaken by mutual agreement between the Department and the Collaborator.

This project aims to investigate the feasibility of processing the PPE waste materials using a Microwave Assisted Waste processing technology developed at James Cook University. The specific objectives of the project are: i. Identify the processing conditions (e.g. Microwave power, time) suitable to kill pathogens in the waste material ii. Investigate the presence of pathogens in the residual material or by-products iii. Understand the physical and chemical properties of the by-products to identify potential applications

Banana and mango are the most intensive horticultural crops in tropical Australia. Conventional management practices have depleted soil organic C and produced high N20 emissions. This project will trial soil management innovations in Qld precision agriculture and new forms of N fertiliser.

Enhancing student learning outcomes through a judicious use of blended learning approaches continues to develop traction across the Australian tertiary sector. During 2014 JCU has adopted a collaborative, whole of institution approach to developing and supporting blended learning. This approach has led to collaborations between professional and academic staff, particularly around the purposeful use of technological tools. This project aims to investigate the way that viral leadership defined as “the promotion of ideas, knowledge and skills on an ad hoc basis via informal personal connections” (Cleuett, et al., 2011, p. 4) promotes the use of technology and supports blended learning.
