Sue Devine

Sue Devine is an Associate Professor and Academic Head of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Sue has worked in the Higher Education area for over 20 years and has provided strong leadership at the Discipline, College and University level for many years through roles including Chair of the Discipline Learning and Teaching Committee, Course Coordinator of the MPH, Postgraduate Academic Advisor for the postgraduate public health and tropical medicine programs and membership of Academic Board. Sue has a strong background in public health and health promotion and holds a Doctor of Public Health, Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, a Post Graduate Diploma in Health Promotion, and a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching, as well as having many years of practical experience. She has been instrumental in shaping public health curriculum within undergraduate allied health degrees and postgraduate programs at James Cook University. This has contributed to JCU being a well-recognized and highly regarded leader in postgraduate public health and tropical medicine education in Australia and beyond. Sue teaches across a broad range of public health related areas, but her main area of focus is on health promotion. She also has a strong interest in workforce capacity building in public health and health promotion, evaluation research and the socio-environmental determinants of health. Sue’s excellence in teaching and commitment to student learning was recognised by James Cook University in 2015 when she received a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (overall winner at JCU). Additionally, she also received a National Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in the same year. In 2023 she was highly commended as a Primary Research Advisor in recognition of her demonstrated excellence in the supervision of research degree candidates at the Doctoral or Research Masters level. In 2024 Sue was awarded the Australian Health Promotion Association's Glen Paley Memorial Award in recognition of her contribution in supporting career pathways in health promotion, building professional capacity of members and advocating for the health promotion profession.
