Biography
Dr Carla Ewels is a Senior Lecturer in Statistics and Data Science at James Cook University. She completed her PhD in Statistics at Queensland University of Technology under the supervision of Distinguished Professor Kerrie Mengersen, and has since built a career spanning universities, research organisations, and government agencies.
With over 26 years of experience in data analytics, modelling, and tertiary teaching, Carla brings deep expertise in Bayesian statistics, machine learning, deep neural networks, and process-based modelling. Her applied research addresses pressing real-world challenges across marine science and conservation, biosecurity, agriculture and aquaculture, and aged care. Recent projects include Bayesian modelling to support Crown-of-Thorns Starfish culling operations on the Great Barrier Reef, and near-infrared spectroscopy methods for monitoring pearl oyster health in aquaculture systems.
