Biography
Dr Amar Sholapurkar (BDS, MDS) is working as Senior Lecturer in Clinical Dentistry & Oral Radiology within the College of Medicine and Dentistry, James Cook University (JCU), Cairns. QLD, Australia.
Dr Sholapurkar holds a Masters in Oral Medicine and Radiology from the prestigious Manipal University, India. He has over 16 year teaching (for both undergraduates and postgraduates) and research experience, having started his career at Manipal University as an Assistant Professor (Senior Lecturer) followed by Reader in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology. He also has several years’ experience working in the Middle East, where he undertook teaching and research worked in the University sector.
Dr Sholapurkar has published more than 50 articles in reputed peer reviewed dental journals; has contributed 11 chapters in book and has extensive conference presentations. He has published (edited) a book titled – “PUBLISH AND FLOURISH – Practical Guide for effective scientific writing”. In addition, he has high level board experience, including appointment as an International Advisor and Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice, an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dentistry, as well as a reviewer of five reputable dental journals. He has also contributed radiographic images for a book (in press) to be published by John Wiley & Sons (UK). Furthermore, he has also delivered guest lectures/keynote lectures in dental conventions/international speciality conferences/continuing professional development activities in Australia and abroad.
He is actively involved in clinical research focusing on comparing the efficacy of three antibiotics in the treatment of severe periodontal disease. This challenging research idea led him enrol into a part-time PhD (at JCU Cairns campus), published his Literature review and successfully applied for external research grants.
Research
Research Interests
Since Dr Sholapurkar have an overseas dual qualification (Oral Medicine and Radiology), his research interests include from both areas. From Oral Medicine point of view, his special interest is focussed on comparing the effectiveness of various medicaments in bacterial and fungal infections, in regard to which he has published papers and presented in International conferences. His research career is also focused on Prevalence of Oral mucosal disorders. He is also interested in Oral manifestations of elderly Diabetic patients. He is a regular contributor of challenging cases in the general dental literature, and has published numerous papers with the aim of increasing awareness of accurate diagnosis (both clinically and radiographically) of various lesions in the mouth. In regard to the Oral Radiology component, his research career has focused on Radiographic prevalence of anatomic and pathologic entities in the Oral and Maxillofacial regions. His special interests before the advent of higher imaging modalities were, the Maxillary Sinus Findings/pathologies in the Elderly, Condylar Changes and Its Association with Age/Temporomandibular joint disorders, panoramic radiographic study of mental foramen. His special interests include Interpretation of dental radiographs and applications of advanced diagnostic imaging in dentistry such as small volume CBCT's.
