Abstract

Ungulate species found in ­ ustralia include horses (Equus caballus), donkeys (E. asinus), Asian water buffalo (Bubalis bubalis), cattle (Bos tarus/indicus), goats (Capra aegagrus hircus), six deer species (Cervidae), dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) and pigs (Sus scrofa). All of these species, except for the dromedary camel, are hoofed mammals, and none are native to ­ ustralia. Lago- morphs are small mammals defined by their unique den- tition, namely the two pairs of continuously growing incisors on the upper jaw. The lagomorph species found in ­Australia are the European hare (Lepus europaeus) and the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), neither of which is native to ­ ustralia. Rodents are characterised by a single pair of continuously growing incisors on the upper and lower jaws. Currently, ­ Australia has at least 54 species of native rodents (across seven groups) and four species of introduced rodennt.
