Jamie Oliver wrote First Nations characters the wrong way. Non-Indigenous writers need to listen to Indigenous writers first

Abstract
This article is a response by Wiradjuri writer and academic Jeanine Leane and JCU researcher Elizabeth Smyth to the news that broke on 9 November 2024 about British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. Oliver had drawn the ire of the The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Corporation with his attempt at crafting a First Nations Australian character in a children’s novel. The book had been withdrawn from sale by his publisher, Random House UK. Both Oliver and his publisher confirmed there had been no consultation with any Indigenous organisation, community or individual before the book was published.
