Abstract

As supply chains aim to recover from the sudden impact of COVID-19, this paper investigates the potential of Industry 4.0 technologies toward digital supply chain in emerging economies, as part of that process of recovery. Primary empirical data was collected via an online survey of Vietnamese supply chain experts. Analytical techniques such as correlation, regression, and Monte Carlo simulations were used, to examine the current adoption and usage rates of Industry 4.0 technologies, and gain an insight into the potential impact. The findings indicate that Industry 4.0 technologies are still at an early stage of adoption amongst most Vietnamese supply chain firms, the Internet of Things (IoT) being the most widely adopted technology. Whilst the verdict of this study confirms that some Industry 4.0 technologies are in the initial stages of adoption within the supply chain in emerging economies, they clearly reveal that forecasted investment does not align with the expected impacts. These may raise a concern toward digitalization. The results can shape policymakers, in emerging economies or with a strong influence in them, to prepare for the digital roadmap and thus ensuring focused investment impact.
