Abstract
[Extract] Mental illness is a condition that is characterised by a clinically significant disturbance, whether it be temporary or permanent, of thought, mood, behaviour and/or perception. One in five Australians experience a mental health problem every year (SANE Australia, 20 l 4a). The World Health Organization (2015) defines mental disorders as being characterised by a combination of abnormal thoughts, emotions, behaviour and relationships with others, such as schizophrenia, depression or disorders due to drug abuse. Dr Mark Cross, Clinical Director of Psychiatry at Liverpool Hospital, believes that mental illness is one of the very few illnesses that does not discriminate; anyone can become mentally ill, no matter their gender, race, social standing or financial status (Willes & O'Clery, 2014).
