Abstract

[Extract] The respiratory system (Figure 12–1) is responsible for moving air in and out of the lungs, thus performing the essential functions of ventilation and gas exchange. Ventilation is achieved by breathing, which is a combination of inhaling and exhaling. Respiratory function can be affected by age, environment, lifestyle, behavioural, medications and stress (Dwyer & Quinney, 2015). (Table 12–1 and Table 12–2) The respiratory system comprises the upper respiratory system (nose, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and pharynx) and the lower respiratory system (larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli) (Martini, Nath, & Bartholomew, 2012).
