Abstract
[Extract] Personal hygiene or personal care is the self-care by which people attend to such functions as bathing, toileting, general body hygiene and grooming. Hygiene is a highly personal matter determined by various factors, including individual and cultural values and practices. Hygienic care or hygiene care involves care of the skin, hair, nails, teeth, oral and nasal cavities, eyes, ears and perineal-genital areas. There are a number of different phrases used in Australian health care facilities, which all mean assisting someone with their hygiene needs. They include: personal care, personal hygiene, assisting with activities of daily living, hygienic care/practices and hygiene care. For the purpose of this unit the different phrases may be used interchangeably.
