Abstract
[Extract] Nursing care involves many activities where the nurse may have to twist, turn, pull, push, lift and bend. These physical demands of nursing care have been associated with an increase in musculoskeletal sprains, strains and injuries (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2014; Australian Safety and Compensation Council, 2008; Mitchell, O’Sullivan, Burnett, Straker, & Rudd, 2008; Smith & Leggat, 2004). In this unit, readers will be given essential guidelines for safe and ef¬ficient strategies for assisting a person to move and change positions. The use of manual handling devices (mechanical lifter, mechanical beds, slide board or pat slide, slide sheet, transfer belts, monkey bar, wheelchair), adequate numbers of staff and proper body alignment for both the nurse and person requiring assistance are discussed. Clinical skills covered in this unit include: conducting a falls risk assessment, helping a person out of bed, assisting with mobilisation, turning or moving a dependent person and using a lifting device.
