Abstract

Finding Queensland in Australian Cinema presents an extended, depth perspective on Australian cinema through the regional lens of focus on films set or made in Queensland from the 1960s to the present. It is an innovative study of cultural discourses of regional identity and cinematic geographies through an examination of specific film texts and the production circumstances. The book shows how 'Queensland'transitions from spaces inseparably identified with nation in pre-Revival cinema until the 1970s, to a more autonomous player in the transnational industry in the twenty-first century. The dramatic growth of motion picture production in Queensland and the patterns of use of coastal and outback spaces as settings of films are discussed, and the impact of Native Title. Landscapes, history, Indigeneity, genre and gender, myths and counter-myths of paradise, are all shown to constitute aspects of region, and recurring themes in the visual and narrative poetics. Comprising eight essays, an introduction and conclusion, among the many landmark films discussed are: Age of Consent; The Irishman; Radiance; Sanctum, and Mystery Road, among many others.
