Abstract

[Extract] Human communication is a dynamic process that changes over the life span. Communicating with a child differs markedly from communicating with an adult. In the healthcare setting, communication often occurs with people who are anxious about their health status, sometimes leading to miscommunication. There is an added layer of complexity in healthcare when interacting with someone from a different culture or with different professional training, to ensure that there is common understanding. While these issues can be overcome, you need to be mindful that what is said should also be what is understood.
