Fauna and novel ecosystems

This chapter discusses the causes and rates of novel ecosystem formation as they pertain to fauna, and faunal use of novel ecosystems. It also describes how novel ecosystems can be used to achieve faunal conservation goals. Human agency is the key driver in the formation of novel ecosystems. The chapter illustrates the human influence mechanisms of novel ecosystem creation with brief discussions of species introductions, species eradications, climate change, land-use practices and a combination of drivers. Novel plant communities can provide habitat features for native fauna. The chapter argues that novel ecosystems are now critical for maintenance of faunal diversity at the genetic, species and ecosystem levels, and restoration goals.
